Ian Mahan (Single Release)
A Colorado transplant from small-town Illinois, singer-songwriter Ian Mahan has spent the last decade writing and performing music for the sole purpose of connecting to his audience. His acoustic-style songs, with melodies ranging from mellow to upbeat, are marked by characteristic lyrical vulnerability.
Though he attended piano lessons from a young age, Ian did not find his true instrumental passion until his 18-year- old self picked up a guitar. Ian’s high school and college years were spent exploring music in the form of countless different bands, ultimately, establishing himself as a solo artist in 2008.
In 2011, Ian produced his first, self-titled EP with his drummer, band director and long-time friend, JD Raab. Four years later, Ian released "Tiger Lily,” his sophomore album which marries the singer-songwriter genre with pop-style, electronic elements.
Released earlier this year, Ian’s six-song EP, “Rockford,” showcases his evolving musical style grounded in emotional transparency and whispery acoustics. The album is a collection of curated songs that highlight life’s joys and miseries – inspired by breakups, Rocky Balboa and everything in between.
Ian has performed with notable artists such as Ryan Adams, Leon Bridges, Vanessa Carlton, Howie Day, Nina Storey, The Rocket Summer, Parachute, Stu Larsen, Tyler Hilton, Christina Perri and Joe Brooks.
China Curtiss Kent displayed an uncanny knack for melody at an early age. At 18 months, she began whistling before she could speak in full sentences, and by the time she was 7, she was writing her own piano compositions. After a two-year stint at Vanderbilt's Blair School of Music, China ventured out on her own, traveling the world with Youth With A Mission. She finally landed in Denver, CO in 2000, and began teaching music and theater, recording her first album under the production assistance of Isaac Slade. After meeting and marrying her soulmate and musical accomplice, Seth Kent, the couple traveled to England to join Nathan Johnson in the composition and recording for the now cult classic, BRICK. In 2005, the couple moved to Boston to join The Cinematic Underground for a grassroots promotion and national tour of the stage show Annasthesia. While in Boston she acquired a composition gig with director Mark Woollen for his roller-derby documentary, Jam. China was an assistant music supervisor and pianist for the film, The Brothers Bloom. She has played on myriad albums and has moonlighted with the likes of Elin Palmer, Tom Hagerman and Mishkah.
Born in Florida and raised as a missionary kid, Seth has seen the world and loved nearly all of it. During these travels both a love of making music and a habit of collecting eclectic stringed instruments formed. He is a multi instrumentalist with a particular bent toward the unique, a song writer, and singer as well as a recording engineer. He is also a licensed pilot, has made beer, was once a trash man, built custom log homes, builds guitars out of cigar boxes, juggles and has run a diesel bus on veggie oil.
this broken beat
"there is a fine line between living life on the edge and living to play it safe. To truly be alive calls for some risks, as well as direction for those risks. We will inevitably get caught up in ideas of irrelevance years down the road, and make mistakes out of in-the-moment emotions, but it's all to illuminate the beauty of choice & freewill itself. Because you need to know what's standard, before you can explore. You'll need to feel the tension, before you can release. It's a sort of stimulation, the way our minds behave. So you have to taste what's bitter so you can taste what's sweet & you'll have to hear what's broken, before you make a beat"
