Key Note Speaker for several Take Back the Night campus vigils, domestic violence, AIDS awareness for young adults and the National Women in Hip-Hop conference.
Business savvy is an unlikely combination for most artistic minds; bending the bell curve Sheba understands the need for community building, cooperative economics and a voice for the people, she founded of Rough Language, a ten-year running multi-city Poetry Slam and live music series, that requires it’s attendants to participate in a community service/rebuilding project to compete.
In addition to performing and lecturing in over 200 colleges and universities domestic and abroad; including Poet in Residence at U of Ill (Urbana) and the London Academy for Urban Development in London England, arts driven corporations including Rockport and Red Bull commissioned and fully endorsed Rem while she wrote and produced "Say What?!?" a national collegiate performance Word-Shop.
Sheba has performed her poems as a solo artist and with her all girl alternative rock band, Tempo 1-60, in over eight countries, three continents including but not limited to across the United States, West Africa, and four countries in Europe, with a special detour to K Town Germany US Air Force base where she captured an intimate and unforgettable audience of US troops.
From her performances at the Savoy in LA, The House of Culture in Antigua, West Indies or Harlem's Apollo Theater, according to Nikki Giovanni Sheba is one of the most dynamic (writers and) performers of her generation. After hibernating all winter and her new show, My Thoughts Out-Loud, is set to grow wings on a new tour in 2011. Sheba’s debut rock album, They Say, is scheduled to start recording early Spring with Grammy nominated producer Nick Chahwala. Accompanying Sheba on They Say, cameo appearances by Eva Kennedy, RES and other black-girl rockers.
Memberships include: Facebook!, Alternate Roots, The Atlanta Poets Union, Mothers Against the War, Fair Trade, Shades Retreat and National Association for Women. She currently organizes several poetry slams, readings, and writing workshops in Atlanta, GA.
Sheba lives in Atlanta, where she is an avid dog rescuer raising a 2-year old Great Dane, Spirit, and treading waters in the dating pool. Her teenage son, honor student and rising basketball star, Allerik Freeman, lives four –long- hours away in Charlotte, NC.
Immediate goals include, relocating to Charlotte, earning an MFA in Creative Writing followed by obtaining a Civil Rights Law Degree with the intentions of assisting artists while avoiding courtrooms.
