Guest event: The Secret Variety Society Presents
The Secret Variety Society is proud to present four of New York’s most wonderfully weird variety artists for an evening of debauchery and insignificant joy.
Come revel, laugh and feel morally superior to the hardest working acts on the scene in this weird, intimate and wonderful show.
Matt Roper is a comedian, writer and neo-vaudevillian. He recently made his NYC theater debut portraying Chico Marx, eldest of the iconic Marx Brothers, in I'll Say She Is: The Marx Brothers Musical. He performs internationally with his alter-ego Wilfredo, a powerhouse musical comedy creation with two albums, a short film and countless tours to his credit. He is a founder member of The Secret Variety Society and the proud recipient of a Malcolm Hardee Award – presented annually at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
SABRINA CHAP is a Brooklyn based cabaret performer and raconteur. She’s got classical piano skills, the ballad lyrics of Tom Waits, the onstage antics of Phyllis Diller and the voice of a whiskey angel. Described as ‘Rousing!’ by the New Yorker, her sets are a ragtime stompin’ good time, full of laughs, heartbreaks, and just plain good songwriting.
Noted for her live shows, where she mixes high theatricality with gut punches of truth, she has graced some of the biggest stages and the smallest barrooms a broad could find, including THE LOWRY (Manchester), CAFÉ DE PARIS (London), THEATRE BIZARRE (Detroit), SPIEGELTENT (NY, with Bindlestiff Cirkus) and more. “In her stage show she draws you in, disarms you with humour, and then makes you sit up and listen to what she has to say. The end result is intoxicating.” (Polari Magazine, UK)
Magic Brian has been entertaining young and old with his unique brand of comedy-magic and sideshow for over 20 years and got his start in comedy clubs and variety shows in New York City. He has toured with the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus and has taken his show around the world, performing in 18 countries and more than 50 cities. He has appeared on the Late Show With David Letterman, VH1, Good Day New York and has performed at the Edinburgh and Adelaide Fringe Festivals and the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.
"Unbelievable, wasnt it?" David Letterman
Born in Russia, Miss Ekaterina is a renowned contortionist and aerialist resident in New York City. Besides performing with circus and entertainment companies like Cirque Musica, Bindlestiff Family Cirkus, USO, and Circus Una Motorcycle Thrillshow, she has also appeared in live art installations and films of Matthew Barney, Kenny Scharf, Scott Ewalt, Julie Taymor, and Joe Coleman; shared the stage with Drive-By Truckers and Jack Black; performed as a knife-thrower's target girl on a Guinness Book of Records tour and in the off-Broadway show Maximum Risk.
Jenny Lee Mitchell
A native New Yorker who has has lived and performed for many years in Vienna, Munich, Hamburg and Berlin, Jenny Lee Mitchell-a.k.a. Mad Jenny- is a performance artist and satirist. An alumni of the Experimental Theater Wing at NYU, she has performed in operetta, musical theater and cabaret, performing Off-Broadway and with many companies who present works based in clown, music, cabaret and devised theater styles.
