"With this new project, I wanted to reach back and taste all those wonderful flavors of music that sadly aren’t as common as they used to be." — Pete Escovedo
After a sold-out, through-the-roof performance for Freight & Salvage's New Year's Eve, legendary Latin Jazz Timbalero Pete Escovedo returns on March 24 for a record release party for his new album, "Back to the Bay", which celebrates the music scene in the Bay Area from Pete's first gig at the California Hotel’s Gold Room in 1953 to the diverse blend of music which had emerged by the ‘70s and is now known as the Bay Area Sound.
Pete Escovedo breaks down the barriers between Smooth Jazz, Salsa, Latin Jazz and contemporary music. Join us in welcoming The Pete Escovedo Latin Jazz Orchestra back to The Freight for an evening of favorites and songs from the new high-energy latin jazz album recorded with some of the best musicians in the scene.

The Latin Jazz Youth Ensemble Of SF (on the Gallery Stage)
The Latin Jazz Youth Ensemble of San Francisco, or LJYE, is a performing group of talented musicians ages ten to 18. Despite their youth, several generations of ensemble musicians have already contributed to the legacy of Latin jazz history by recording three CDs which feature original compositions by the students. The CDs present the student musicians playing alongside notable special guests such as Armando Peraza, Jerry Gonzalez, John Santos, Jeff Cressman, and of course, LJYE music director and multi-instrumentalist John Calloway.
Jesse "Chuy" Varela
Tonight's event will be hosted by Jesse "Chuy" Varela!
For KCSM 91.1 FM's Music Director Jesse "Chuy" Varela, music roots have run deep.
From an early age, Chuy was fascinated by music, playing the guitar in Mexican bands and in the army. He attended Cal State Hayward where he majored in music. But after realizing that music would probably not be a lucrative career, he switched to mass communications where he studied print, TV and radio. He worked at the college's cafeteria radio station with KCSM's Clifford Brown Jr. and Keith Hines.
Hear Jesse 'Chuy' Varela on Latin Jazz, Sunday afternoons from 2pm to 6pm, and on Jazz in the Afternoon, Monday through Wednesdays from 2pm to 6pm.
