Upholstery has been churning out its particular style of dark chamber rock since 2007. Drawing from a wide range of musical influences - from Tom Waits to King Crimson, from early jazz to post-punk - the group has developed a sonic landscape that is both timeless and confounding. Their current lineup is a monolithic septet featuring electric cello, violin, trumpet and accordion supported by a mind-melded rhythm section. When not on stage, the group can be found in the orchestra pit composing and performing original scores for theater. Like granny's favorite davenport, the group maintains a distinct sensibility for leathery integrity and peculiar - albeit comforting - odors.
S.T.A.R.W.O.O.D: Sociopathic Time Altering Robot Warrior Of Organic Design
Sent back in time from Planet Vitrus moments before the planet’s destruction in the year 2776 A.D, Gabriel Starwood was created to alter the time continuum in an attempt to control the ever expanding Human Race: intergalactic cosmos devourers and the eventual destroyers of Vitrus. As an advanced cyborg capable of entering and controlling the human body via nanotechnology, Gabriel has inhabited historically influential Earthlings since the dawn of man, from Jesus Christ and Joan of Arc to Angela Davis and The Marquis De Sade.
Accompanied by a small, yet crucial team of Vitruvian Androids, the Propaganda Performance module of the S.T.A.R.W.O.O.D. mission has taken form as a ‘Cyber Rock’ quintet. Raising the awareness of mankind for the sake of the cosmos, a typical S.T.A.R.W.O.O.D. performance centers on the values of the Vitruvian species, their eventual destruction at the hands of the expansionist hordes, and the S.T.A.R.W.O.O.D. prototype’s mass manipulation of the Human race.
The quintet is comprised of a classical pianist, an effected bass guitar, an analog synthesizer, looped and effected vocals, and drums. Theatrical in presentation, primal in execution, and psychedelic in nature, the resulting sound is comparable to that of a woolly mammoth being downed by laser-spears, falling face first into a pagan orgy.
On The Water
Conceived in 2008 as an outlet for experimental songwriting. On the Water has thrived as a member of the DIY arts community, evolving through several permutations with VanVliet remaining at the group’s center as songwriter and lead vocalist. Superposition continues the thread of their previous works by drawing on the ramshackle approach and lyrical candor of the American folk tradition; yet it also signals a marked evolution in style and substance. While still rooted in the familiar, the album reaches increasingly toward the avant-garde by fusing an off-kilter chamber folk with heavy progressive arrangements. Inspired by quantum theory and alchemical transformation, this collection of songs is a meditation on modern life, the impermanence of beauty, and the struggle for meaning in what can seem an unflinchingly brutal world. On the Water will be on tour throughout the fall and into early 2018.
