SVER and Moira Smiley
A three-part evening of SVER, Moira Smiley and Moira Smiley & SVER.
Tonight is the World Premier of a collaboration between singer/composer Moira Smiley & the epic nordic folk group, SVER. This international partnership takes fiddle-driven tunes from Norway and Sweden and melds them with wild, lonesome songs from old Scandinavia and the Appalachians. The heart of the collaboration is adding thoughtful, daring new text and context to traditional songs and tunes. Smiley’s plaintive, powerful voice weaves between the fiery, inventive forces of SVER’s fiddles, accordion, guitar and drums.
One of the most acclaimed Nordic roots band of their generation, SVER brings Scandinavian fiddle and folk traditions together with explosive force, a new kind of epic Nordic folk music! Ranging from dreamy melodies to swinging, pounding, sweaty rhythms, all fueled by a madcap sense of humor–as shown in the group’s of official music videos, which mix together 80s exercise videos and Nordic ski dancing footage. But these five musicians are very serious about the traditions from which they come. On FRYD (“Joy”), the long awaited follow up to two previous critically acclaimed albums, SVER bring an eclectic mix of Nordic roots, from breathtaking Hallings dances, to thrilling Reinlanders and “false waltzes.” They inject a shot of adrenalin into the old melodies through the sheer force of the performance and arrangements, so much so that they’re often described as “sounding electric without electricity.”
Olav Luksengård Mjelva, fiddle and hardangerfiddle
Anders Hall, fiddle and viola
Leif Ingvar Ranøien, diatonic accordion
Adam Johansson, guitar
Jens Linell, drums and percussion
Singer/Composer, Moira Smiley travels the world as a composer, performer and song collector. She taken her voice, accordion and banjo across the planet, touring with artists like tUnE-yArDs, SOLAS, Billy Childs, The Lomax and Folklife Projects, KITKA, Theatre Of Voices and The Lyris String Quartet. She’s become a well-known choral composer, with millions of singers singing her work worldwide, and premieres including The Los Angeles Master Chorale’s “Lux Aeterna” in The Walt Disney Concert Hall.
