Sils Maria

Sils Maria

Sils Maria began as the solo musical project of Jeremy Linzee, and was at first a collection of songs started in Brooklyn, NY where he fronted the indie band Summer Lawns. As his first band folded, the songs moved out with him to the small town of Stony Brook on the North Shore of Long Island, NY. Looking to conjure the famous Caspar David Friedrich painting of a solitary wanderer over a sea of clouds, Linzee named the project after a mountain town in Switzerland with an incredible meteorological phenomenon: one can stand on the top of a quiet peak and watch as a cloud formation rolls through the valley beneath.

This feeling of weightlessness and solitude is reflected in music and lyrics that are both dreamy and spare. Songs unfold as snapshots and streams of consciousness, floating around yet somehow flickering with the details of everyday, creating somber portraits of the lives of people who seem to be themselves adrift and alone.

After adding to his archive and then trimming down the list to a handful of recordings, Linzee settled on the tracks that make up Sils Maria’s debut record East, which will see it’s official release on August 18, 2017. Recorded and mixed at his home the album places overlapped vocals and acoustic guitar amid a composed haze of reverb and delay, as electric guitars, basses, synths, pianos, and organs haunt the edges. The album was mastered by Timothy Stollenwerk who has also worked on records for Ariel Pink, Grouper, Mt. Eerie, and Morphine. After having the album on repeat for days, Tim sweetly called the record a “masterpiece.” Additional musicians on the record include Justin Keller (Land of Leland) who plays Saxophone and Elizabeth Merrifield who plays violin.

As a live act Sils Maria adds additional musician to the line-up, Amy Tietjen sings and plays synths, Mark Tietjen plays bass, Michael Chiaramonte plays piano and organ, and Nathan DiMauro (Doctors and Lawyers) plays drums. The full band is currently at work on a follow up record to East which they plan to release in 2018.
