The Besnard Lakes

The Besnard Lakes are a Canadian indie rock band from Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Formed in 2003 by the husband and wife team of Jace Lasek and Olga Goreas, the band also includes Kevin Laing (drums), Richard White (guitar), Sheenah Ko (keyboards) and Robbie MacArthur (guitar).
Two of the band's five albums have been nominated for the Polaris Music Prize.

Death Valley Girls

Think of Death Valley Girls as an acid-tripping science experiment that’s been buried alive, and resurrected as a sexually liberated dystopian chain-gang. A cosmic scar, if you will, on the hills of Echo Park, where the experiment began in 2013 by proto-punk Bonnie Bloomgarden and guitarist Larry Schemel — who got lost in the desert, returned to their haunted garage in Echo Park, and pieced together their vision with shopworn images of sexploitation babes, a blood-soaked Iggy Pop, and Bloomgarden’s series of phantasms, the result of spending a year in a mental institution, where she planned her neon-glowing odyssey by listening to Black Sabbath and UFO, reading about alien conspiracy theories, and deriving her band’s moral compass from a line she saw in a movie:

“Everybody’s gotta be in a gang,” from campy sexploitation romp Switchblade Sisters (1975).

Dead Ghosts

Vancouver-based garage rockers Dead Ghosts released the all-encompassing third album Love and Death and All the Rest, via Burger Records. Love and Death and All the Rest hears the band taking a refreshing DIY approach to recording, eschewing a standard studio in favour of a dilapidated barn on the outskirts of Vancouver. The self-produced album features a slightly more restrained feel, opting for a "fuller, less abrasive sound" than heard on previous releases. The first single Drink it Dry is a charming blend of bluesy riffs and psychedelic pop.

Naomi Punk

If Rock and Pop music are instruments of the Neoliberal period, then they must be repurposed and reorganized. Not just formally, but politically. Coincidentally, the structure of ‘Yellow’ (in spite of the so-called difficulty of its 2xLP format) is no different than recent confessional documents from Frank Ocean, Solange, Kendrick, etc., thus owing much more to the Pop format than its length would suggest. 'Rock' and 'Punk' have become so conservative that they are rendering themselves obsolete as they fail to provide new ideas and solutions for anything other than 'self-expression' and fake posturing. The ‘Yellow’ structure constructs a three-dimensional listening experience, and while it does not pretend to know all the answers, it at the very least (and perhaps most importantly) posits a serious alternative.

Naomi Punk are from Olympia, Washington.

If it takes any more than fifteen seconds to hear what "mean" means to the Michigan men who make up Heaters, pick up the needle and start again. "Mean Green" is the A-side track of the band's new seven-inch single from Beyond Beyond is Beyond Records, presenting a surf-centric slab of sonic stomp that doubles as a definition of "mean."

In the case of Heaters, "mean" is meant in the context that might be used to describe a 1970 GTO piloted by a jittery Warren Oates – not belligerent, but aggressive, blank-eyes staring at the horizon, fueled by dread and ready to accelerate into the nearest dangerous curve.

What's "green" about "Mean Green" then seems to be Heaters ability to glide into this path naturally, snaking absolutely without hesitation through the song's tight turns in a way that's insistent and invigorating. The flipside of the single, "Levitate Thigh," proves the band to be possessed by the power of rock and roll, initially bringing the tempo to a stuttering slow-roll, before Heaters are once again the willing captives of a Seeds-level web of sounds, guitar snarl, feedback and drums creating the trap in which the band has no chance – and no desire – to escape.

San Francisco-based producer Al Lover has spent the last several years evolving a unique approach to electronic and psychedelic music by way of exploring the common threads within it’s various genres. From the 2011 Garage tinged project Distorted Reverberations - where he remixed bands such as Thee Oh Sees and Night Beats - to his more recent exploration of Synthesized Kraut, Ambient and Dub, Zodiak Versions, Al continues to explore the fringes of Psychedelic music and draw parallels where others might get lost.

Annabelle Chairlegs

Members of Tree Motel Lindsey Mackin and Mark Williams formed Annabelle Chairlegs when they relocated to Austin from their home base of Santa Fe, NM. The band incorporates punk, scuzz rock, and psychedelia into their sound to back up Lindsey’s lyrics, whose topics range from ladies in heaven talking to ladies in hell (Lady In Heaven), prostitutes (Street Urchins), river sirens (Passaic River), disgruntled goths (All Black In The Sun), and songs about stomping out the pegs on a ladder just to see your enemies fall (On The Ladder).
Lead singer and guitarist Lindsey’s head spins and simple-yet-surprisingly-effective guitar playing are a sight to behold. The current line-up includes veteran guitarist Matt Schweinberg (of locals, Schwein!) and bassist and solo-artist-in-his-own-right, Derek Von Nunez Strahan. Watch out for this band – they’ll corner you in an alley and rob you blind of your senses.

Max Pain and The Groovies

Max Pain and The Groovies are a five-piece from Salt Lake City, Utah who play rock ‘n’ roll. The group played their first show at a New Years Eve party and quickly gained a following for their manic stage presence and performances that sometimes included a fire breathing front man. They quickly recorded some demos and started touring around their region, gigging around Salt Lake, Las Vegas, Southern Idaho and Denver and growing a name for themselves in the psyche rock revival scene. In 2012 they won “band of the year” during a contest hosted by Salt Lake’s local Alt-Weekly and used the prize money to plan their first U.S. tour. Max Pain and The Groovies self-released a four-song EP on Halloween 2013. The release features scorching guitar lines, hypnotic vocals and a woozy beat. It drones at times and explodes moments later. It’s an album you can zone to or dance your ass off too. Max Pain and the Groovies released their first full length Album on New Years Eve via Psych Lake City Records for CD/Vinyl Lolipop records on Cassette and Eager Waves Records for Euro promotion and distribution. 2015 so far has them playing official SXSW showcases and caravan tours with Lolipop Records and Burger Records. Catch them at Lolipalooza 2! Drop out of school and smoke bud.

Walrus are here to play for the sake of the song. The Halifax based band's debut LP, Family Hangover, is a fuzzed- out electric blanket of soul with unrepentant strands of authentic heaviosity. Extensive studio experimentation can be heard throughout the sonically unique record, from varispeed warble to Spacemen-3 style saucer-drone attacks. Live, their low-key manner belies a depth and dedication to craft. This band could be thrown on a bill between Love and Sabbath and not embarrass the present.

"The band somehow mix gentle, Brian Wilson vocal melodies and orchestrations with out-of-the-blue punk thrash parts that keep listeners guessing. The high, winsome vocals and chiming 12-string Rickenbacker certainly conjured late '60s cloudy folk-pop, but the rest of the band infused the songs with sharp edges. Some of it recalled the Sadies, and the musicians in Walrus are certainly in the same league.
Back when My Morning Jacket were still kinda metal-y, they made music like Walrus is making now. It's all wild left turns that seem ill-advised but, as they steamroll past, they're a glorious sight to behold."
