Sis, U Belong Here
Sis, U Belong Here (UBH) is a creative, healing and soul vibes gathering for Black women.
Sis, you’re invited to go beyond the surface to engage in a purpose-filled, collaborative, and creative process of BECOMING, BELONGING, and BEING visible. You are invited to come take up space!
if you nod, and say yes, uhm-huh or yaaaaaaas to any of the following questions, then UHB is for you: is “adulting” overrated? do you want to be freer? are you “wo’-out” from having to be put together and “on” all the time? do you want to navigate the world authentically and with more oomph? are you tired of unsolicited opinions about what it is to be a Black Woman? do you wanna give fewer fuqs about other people’s opinions? are you drained and ready for something new? do you wanna be more peace-filled…joy-filled…pleasure-filled? if you’ve answered yes to any of these questions then UBH is for you! in a world where they keep coming for us, come be in community with other amazing sistas also on this path of belonging!
sis, your experiences matter;
sis, you are more than what’s on the surface;
& during UBH we’ll delve deep into your truths.
through a combination of individual, small and large group interactive activities, creative expression will be used to:
•create, take-up and hold space;
• build our capacity for resistance, joy and pleasure;
•promote connection and collaboration;
• dismantle shame, guilt, indecisiveness and isolation;
•support the strength and power of vulnerability;
•move beyond merely sustaining ourselves, to having a healthy sense of belonging;
• remind you of your self-worth
•strengthen your knowingness that you’re the expert of your own experience!
creative expression will include: breathing, embodiment, movement, art-making and visualization.
UBH, affords you an opportunity to take up space, reflect & recharge yourself.
UBH, centers personahood & expression, while nurturing belonging.
UBH, is highly engaging & experiential. to this end, we’ll gather as a declaration that we are meant to thrive and to be here. right here. right now.
U are encouraged to:
• show-up authentically
• remove your shoes upon entry
• wear comfortable light-colored clothes
• bring something meaningfulness to put on the altar
• bring a pillow, yoga mat, blanket to sit comfortably on the floor • bring a bottle of water
veronica precious bohanan
i am a “space-maker,” artist, writer, cultural worker, youth development & pedagogy of the oppressed practitioner, mental health counselor/advocate, and an art therapist. my work centers Black girls and women…our humanity, liberation and mental & emotional health. for twenty-years, and in various capacities, i’ve been space-making, curating empowerment experiences and centering Black girls and women in my community-based work. my work also centers: Black girls and women being the experts of our own lives, the decolonization of self-care, and mental health care as a right for all, not a luxury for some. as an art therapist, i am grounded in a knowing that the creative process can be used to heal, examine, expose, express and expand our human and wellness capacity. art therapy, as a clinical OR non-clinical intervention, is a behavioral health (therapy, prevention, lifestyle management, wellness and rehabilitation), social action and assessment tool that allows for in-depth exploration and motivation. art therapy can include, yet far exceeds, words and verbal reasoning. my artist and therapist selves are rooted in an integrated arts approach. i am most drawn to collage mixed-media, photography and printmaking in the visual arts; however, i am equally vested in expressive writing, dance & movement, theatre & drama and singing.
create. heal. share.
create.heal.share is an arts initiative that uses creative expression to promote emotional wellness, (inter)personal restoration, social action and community building. create.heal.share. is both a safe space and a wellness experience where participants can bring their whole selves. Participants are encouraged to engage in the restorative process of c.h.s. as experts of their own lives. Why create.heal.share ? Many of us crave spaces where we can safely be our whole selves. Spaces where we can be empowered, but also acknowledge, process, and be present with our stuff—our baggage, vulnerabilities, wounds, insecurities, likes and loves. In this space, we do not want someone outside of ourselves being an expert or engaging us with a "savior" or "know it all" mentality. create.heal.share is that space—actively dismantling "wellness" discourses that create and reinforce power imbalances. c.h.s. is grounded in the belief that everyone has potential and unique strengths—not to be defined or devalued by problems or limitations. Subsequently, creative expression, anchors create.heal.share, allowing for participants to engage, explore, explain, elaborate upon, evaluate, transform...and transcend our "stuff."
