Everyone knows Murs! Over 15 years in the game, 20 plus tours spanning 5 continents, 11 solo albums, and a seemingly infinite list of collaborations. There’s not a space he hasn’t touched as an MC. He’s thrived at every level of the game from extreme DIY entrepreneurship in dubbing and selling tapes out of his car, to helping establish indie rap giants like Rhymesayers and Def Jux to signing solo deals at Warner Brothers and Strange Music. Murs’ journey has been documented by almost every music publication and blog, including Rolling Stone, Vibe, Pitchfork and HipHopDx. His music video catalog has garnered several million views on his Youtube channel and has been showcased on several major television outlets such as MTV, Fuse, BET, Revolt TV and VHI Soul. His music has been licensed by multiple video games; Madden, NBA 2K, Tony Hawk and has also been used in several television programs and films including the blockbuster film 21Jumpstreet. Musically he’s collaborated with underground legends such as Atmosphere, 9th Wonder, and members of the iconic group Bad Brains. MURS has also collaborated with mainstream superstars like Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg and Will.i.am..
His biggest contribution to hip hop culture outside of his music is Paid Dues, an independent hip hop festival he founded with Guerilla Union in 2005. From its humble beginnings of one stage, 12 acts, and 3500 attendees, to 2013’s festival which boasted 3 stages, over 40 acts and 27,000 in attendance. The festival has grown in attendance every year and has been profitable every year since its inception. Paid Dues leads the way for him to musically connect with new and untapped talent. Outside of hip-hop, Murs has starred in and produced 3 short films. He’s just recently finished shooting his first feature film, Maul Dawgs. He co-wrote, executive produced, and starred in this PG rated comedy with supporting talent /artists Tabi Bonney and Dee-1. His Hip Hop Trivia app, the first of its kind, was released in Spring 2014 and charted #1 on Itunes its first week of release. He has co-authored two books with respected hip hop journalist Soren Baker and has released a 100 page, full color graphic novel with indie comic publisher Devil’s Due.
MURS signed a new recording deal with independent powerhouse label Strange Music in January 2014. His first collaborative project entitled ¡MURSDAY! with label mates ¡MAYDAY! was released June 10 and debuted #4 on Billboard's independent rap charts. He’s currently in the process of recording his long-awaited solo project “Love & Rockets 2” expected to be released in spring 2015.
Through the years MURS has maintained a theme of positivity, peace, and love in his music. In the past decade that message has been brought to life through his various philanthropic efforts. He has worked with Habitat For Humanity, Ordinary Hero and Southwest Autism Research & Resource Center (SARRC) to name just a few. He not only gives financial support, he makes time annually to be hands-on with most of these organizations. Whether it’s getting together with his fans to build a home for a family in need, being a camp counselor for teens with autism, or making a mission trip to Ethiopia, MURS makes a continued effort to shirk the negative stigmas of greed and violence that surround most rappers. He and his wife recently became parents of two boys via separate adoptions. Now having the family and solid foundation he’s always dreamed of MURS is looking to expanding his empire. His number one focus is his music solo career and filmmaking.
