Phèdre les oiseaux (Phaedra the birds), an international theater project developed to engage communities around the globe, is led by director Jean-Baptiste Sastre. It is based on a new text by playwright Frédéric Boyer drawing from the poetic figures Phaedra and her stepson Hippolytus, with whom she falls in love. Going beyond a retelling of the Greek myth, Phèdre les oiseaux begins just before the classic story ends. Instead of taking her own life, the lead character lives, and attempts to deliver herself from the persecution of history and the criminalization of her lust for Hippolytus. Phaedra’s story of feminine antiquity becomes a modern story, examining themes that inhabit ancient cultural myths—gender, sex, and violence—through a contemporary lens.
