craw, STATS, Black Black Black

Craw were a band from Cleveland, Ohio, formed at Case Western Reserve University in 1988. From 1993 through 2002, craw issued four albums containing some of the strangest, smartest and most innovative heavy music of their era, work that combined the visceral rush of metallic post-hardcore, the compositional majesty of progressive rock and the purposeful abstraction of experimental improv into an insular yet wholly coherent sound. Though the band recorded three full-lengths with Steve Albini, shared bills with legendary acts such as the Jesus Lizard, Melvins and Neurosis, and issued their final record—2002's Bodies for Strontium 90—on vanguard metal label Hydra Head, their output remains all too obscure.

In the fall of 2015, Brooklyn's Northern Spy Records will reissue the first three craw albums as a deluxe 6-LP box set, entitled 1993–1997, shedding new light on this singular and important body of work. In celebration of the release, craw will reunite for two special career-retrospective shows, in Cleveland and Brooklyn, respectively. These concerts will feature all seven ex-members of the band—including drummer Will Scharf, also of fellow Hydra Head alums Keelhaul—performing material from the entire craw catalog in rotating lineups. Craw's Saint Vitus appearance will be their only East Coast performance and first show in New York since 1997.

Brooklyn band STATS recently released their second album, Crowned.
