Dusky are London born production/DJ duo Alfie Granger-Howell and Nick Harriman. Initially gaining recognition during the UK’s 2011 house renaissance, Dusky have since established a diverse, inimitable sound that draws on everything from hardcore and Detroit techno to ambient, progressive house, jazz, and other more experimental musical forms.
Since their 2011 breakthrough track ‘Flo Jam’, the duo have developed a reputation for classy, club-ready anthems ranging from their Beatport #1 ‘Careless’ and the darker ‘Love Taking Over’ to piano house homage ‘Yoohoo’ and the multi-textured euphoria of ‘Skin Deep’. 2016 saw them cement their reputation as a cult production force with their expansive ‘Outer’ LP, with both the sample-heavy, electronica mutation ‘Ingrid Is A Hybrid’ and the techno/grime fusion of Wiley collaboration ‘Sort It Out Sharon’ breaking new ground for the duo.
Dusky Live, imagined alongside the 2016 ‘Outer’ LP, presented the album’s genre-shy excursions alongside fresh live reworks of the duo’s back catalogue. Since it’s inception, the show has graced tastemaker festivals on both sides of the Atlantic, as well as extensively touring the UK – earning them the prize of Best Live Act at DJ Mag’s Best Of British Awards.
Equally loved for their considered, well sourced DJ sets, the duo have toured extensively since 2011 playing prestigious venues such as London’s Fabric, Berlin’s Panorama Bar and Ibiza’s DC10, as well as festival stages across the world.
As label owners, their 17 Steps imprint has released forward thinking house and techno from the likes of Bwana, Velvit, Trevino, Christian Piers and Lo Shea. As the label continues to develop, Dusky remain working across multiple disciplines, firmly rooted in the dance music culture that has inspired them ever since their formative days raving as teenagers at venues across London
Bwana (Aus Music)
Bwana is set for a large 2015. His recent ‘Flute Dreams EP’ for Will Saul’s Aus Music imprint is already being hailed as a potential record of 2014, with near universal support in the press and his peers. The title track has been featured in both Sasha and Huxley’s respective Essential Mixes for BBC Radio 1, as well as in sets and mixes from names including Laurent Garnier, J. Phlip and Jacques Greene. Clearly it’s no fluke that the young Canadian has become the first North American to release on the esteemed label, already home to the music of names like Midland, Dusky, Joy Orbison and many more. Having cut his teeth with a series of critically acclaimed EP’s in 2012, Bwana(aka Nathan Micay) made a conscious decision to step out of the limelight in 2013 and take the proper time needed to develop both his sound and abilities in the studio. In his own words: “this time was incredibly fruitful and I’m happy to be back now with more than enough music ready to be released in the coming years. Music that I know I can be proud of.” With a new sound, new skills and a newly found confidence, 2015 is surely set to be the breakout year for Bwana. “New EP is sick”-Skream “Fuck, this is gooooood. Brilliant EP”-Laurent Garnier “5 stars for Aomame!”-Deetron “Hot!”-Adam Beyer “Hammering Flute Dreams in my sets!”-Huxley “That Flute Dreams track thoooo”-Jacques Greene
Pumpkin (Pocket Underground)
Nicholas “Pumpkin” Alvarado is your new favorite music producer/DJ. His spot-on song selections, special remixes and original productions have made for unforgettable live sets that seamlessly span every genre and eschew the latest trends in favor of timeless melodies that will leave a ginormous smile plastered across your face.
Whether starting the party or closing it down, Pumpkin’s inspired mixes are always lovingly sequenced and aim to set the perfect mood. He’s played alongside fellow acclaimed house music mainstays like Lee Burridge, Justin Martin, Nick Warren and KCRW’s Jeremy Sole as well as progressive electronic music pioneers like Bluetech, Blockhead, EOTO and The Glitch Mob. Pumpkin has become an in-demand, fan-favorite at major music festivals like Coachella, Lightning in a Bottle and Sea of Dreams, where he closed the event after his musical hero, Trentemoller. Pumpkin’s acclaimed debut EP, “Love Letters,” featured collaborations with singer Katie Mowgli of the breakout band, The Mowglis and lyricist, EVeryman along with his sought after remixes from the likes of Florence + The Machine and Lila Rose.
He’s been part of the esteemed Pocket Underground family since 2006, when after playing in rock bands all his life, he found a new passion in the hypnotic rhythms of deep house music. Pumpkin honed his now signature sound by daring to incorporate the singer-songwriter, punk rock ethos and childhood nostalgia of his past, with the futuristic sounds of the present.
In everything he touches, Pumpkin’s colorful personality shines through and he loves nothing more than to have fun with his audience as his remixes for the likes Peter Gabriel, David Bowie and The Muppets will attest to. But whether you catch Pumpkin playing at a massive festival, packed club, underground warehouse party or a special sunrise set, you’ll never have more fun on a danceloor. Simply put, this is music to fall in love to.
