Zach Deputy Band
Zach Deputy Band
There is nothing out there like Zach Deputy. Truly a one-man band, he is a powerhouse of performance, technical chops, and one hell of a charismatic presence. Put simply, Zach Deputy does what is called live looping: layering sounds through the magic of technology to create a full band effect. He isn’t the only performer out there doing this, but he has taken the technique to the next level. First and foremost, however, Zach Deputy is a songwriter, a shredding guitarist and a soulful singer with a 4+ octave vocal range. He can also drop freestyle rhymes with the best of them. The Zach Deputy sound is essentially roots rock, but in his case the roots are in soul, calypso and dancehall, underpinned by driving hip-hop, rock steady, Motown and Stax backbeats created with his layered vocal beatboxing. On top of the backbeat, Zach Deputy’s nylon strings pull multiple duties as bass, rhythm and lead guitar. Riding over that, a plethora of sounds-- keyboard, steel drums and an entire horn section-- come pumping and grinding out of the speakers when Zach takes the stage. He is a one man dance party, but he can also bring an audience to rapt attention with a heartfelt love ballad.

Hailing from the South Carolina coast, Zach Deputy’s family roots are in Puerto Rico and St. Croix. Cruzan rhythms and folk songs competed with blues and American roots music for space on the family stereo. Having toured the country in his late teens and early 20’s with a couple of bands that just didn’t inspire him, Zach Deputy followed his muse back to the Atlantic coast, where he began to craft his own approach to music as a solo artist. Zach embraced the creative freedom of performing alone, but soon realized it also had its limitations. Thus, he began to employ live looping as a means of filling out the sound. Zach Deputy is now a full band unto himself, made possible through simple technology, but delivered by a skill and mastery of technique, made pure through the injection of warm, charming soul.

From his base in Hilton Head, Zach Deputy has been performing 250-300 shows a year for the last four years, and has expanded his base into the Northeast and Midwest over the last 12 months. The pace of growth has been startling. Tourists and summer residents of the South Carolina and Georgia beachside resort communities got caught up in the fun took the music back home, creating fan bases in places where Zach Deputy had yet to travel, leading to remarkable first time attendance numbers in many new markets. Promoters and regional acts, blown away by the refreshing new sound, have also enthusiastically made it their mission to help Zach build his fanbase. Zach Deputy now basically lives and works from a small box truck, playing almost every night of the week. The tireless work ethic is paying off, as audiences all up-and-down the East Coast and as far West as the Mississippi are reacting with genuine joy and passion, spreading the word to friends and fellow music lovers. Zach Deputy is bound to hit your town soon. If he does, head on over—he will be glad to see you—but be sure to bring your dancing shoes… and prepare for the wow factor.
The Van Burens
The Van Burens
A fun-loving and animated band, the Van Burens strive to make each concert experience unique. Whether hosting a bathrobe dance party, rocking a cruise ship on Boston Harbor, throwing a holiday show that puts Festivus to shame, or simply rollicking through a set list full of surprises, the VBs make every night a time to remember. The band – named after the eighth and greatest President of the United States, Martin Van Buren – began when a high school band reformed post-college and began gigging at bars and house parties, boasting an eclectic catalog of original music and covers and displaying a singular sense of humor. The style of the music ranges from funk to progressive rock to electronic dance grooves to anything that fits the mood. Their first EP, issued in Fall 2009, brings the dance party to your eardrums; just a taste of an exciting, diverse live show.

The VB have played such big stages as Sullivan Hall, Canal Room, and Bitter End in NYC; The Middle East, Johnny D’s, Harper’s Ferry, and Copperfield’s in Boston; and various rooms throughout the greater northeast. In the Spring of 2010 the Van Burens successfully brought their sound across the U.S. on their first-ever national tour, hitting venues in L.A., Chicago, San Diego, Atlanta, San Francisco, and many other cities.
Turbine
Turbine
Turbine has been building a following the past few years around their dynamic live performances and constant touring schedule. Exploring various styles of music from rock to bluegrass to sci-fi, they use their vast catalog of songs as launching pads for improvisation. Recently chosen by Relix Magazine as artists "On the Verge", they have now released their second studio album Reward to critical praise. Ryan Rightmire, playing the harmonica and acoustic guitar at the same time, brings this classic combo into the 21st century as he manipulates effects that can turn his harmonica into an electric guitar, organ, and even a turntable. Jeremy Hilliard, in addition to being a prolific songwriter, brings an explosive electric guitar style steeped in the blues and roots traditions of the south. This one two punch of intertwining soloists, backed by Eric Johnson on drums and Justin Kimmel on bass, sound like nothing you've heard before. Their ability to switch styles has allowed them to play in any situation, from performing Led Zeppelin songs with Marco Benevento of The Duo to sitting in with bluegrass legends the Del McCoury Band. Based out of New York City, they have appeared at the Wakarusa Festival, twice at the 10,000 Lakes Festival, Strange Creek Campout, Camp Creek, The Gathering, The Sunshine Daydream Festival, and three years at the Bele Chere Festival. They have also appeared at such renowned venues as the B.B. King Blues Club, State Theatre in VA, the Knitting Factory, Lion's Den, Paradise Rock Club, Iron Horse, North Star Bar, the Haunt, Starr Hill, and Nectar's. They have shared the bill with countless talented bands including Bob Weir and Ratdog, Trey Anastasio, The Black Crowes, Derek Trucks, Phil Lesh and Friends, Les Claypool, Jimmy Herring, The Benevento/Russo Duo, The Del McCoury Band, The String Cheese Incident, Gov't Mule, Drive-By Truckers, and Widespread Panic.

Turbine's new album Reward, released in 2007, brings their songwriting and musicianship to the next level. In it you can hear the many influences that have made them who they are today, from the songwriting of Bob Dylan to the futuristic sounds of Radiohead. But who are Turbine…

Jeremy Hilliard moved from Virginia to Manhattan to study jazz guitar. He attended the Mannes School of Music and soon began playing around the city. As his songwriting progressed he found himself identifying more along those lines than as a jazz musician. Ryan Rightmire actually started out playing the French Horn. He spent 15 years of intense studying in classical music and jazz, all the while experimenting with electronics and effects. Soon after moving to Manhattan he made a discovery: "the French Horn is a civilized instrument and I'm not a civilized man." It was then that he switched over to the harmonica and guitar. When Jeremy moved into the apartment next door to Ryan, they began a songwriting partnership. Eric Johnson, the newest member of the band, has added another dimension to this sound. Bringing an exploratory approach to the music, his intensity and drive to push the boundaries of improvisation take the band into unexpected places on a nightly basis. Justin Kimmel provides the final piece to the puzzle with his bass guitar and vocal harmonies. Originally from Colorado, he has the ability to seamlessly switch from one style to the next, anchoring the sound at every turn.
