Hailing from St. Paul, Minnesota, 16 year old singer/songwriter/producer Spooky Black arrived on the scene early in 2014 with his effortlessly wet and raw album "Black Silk".
Mature beyond his years, Black hit home with the album's standout single "Without U". Along with the accompanying video and its contradicting imagery, "Without U" alludes to the somber and comedic side of the withdrawn figure behind the sounds.
Having the public draw mixed conclusions on where the singers inspiration and focus lies, it's safe to say, Black has carefully and stealthily crafted his reputation as one of the most compelling and perplexed voices of his generation. Following Black Silk, came the surprise recent release of the "Leaving EP". This equally compelling effort depicts the growth of Spooky Black in his vocal and lyrical ability over dark beats and warped guitars. Inspired by his eclectic tastes and the pulse of the city around him, Spooky Black effortlessly draws in the grittiness, passion and confusion he is constantly exposed to.
"Leaving" marks the introduction of the brilliance behind Black's ability to carry emotional peaks and troughs throughout the course of the record, crafting a meticulous piece of art along the way. Carefully ensuring the music lies far from the contemporary trends and expectations of a young artist Black reinforces his concrete efforts to continually break standards with the independent release on digital formats. If anything, it has only laid the foundation for what is to come from the artist's upcoming full length effort.
Spooky Black is also one part of the group, thestand4rd which includes: Bobby Raps, Psymun and Allan Kingdom, whose debut album is set to be released fall 2014.
Allan Kingdom (born Allan Kyariga in 1994) is from Winnipeg, Canada. He now lives in Minnesota, and is rapidly making his rise as the eclectic hip-hop upstart from the Twin Cities. In only a matter of months, he's put out multiple videos, noted for their quirky and hipster-laced style, as the visuals to match his trippy, cool-nerd, "not so cool" cool guy music, that leaps bounds above genre lines. The music and videos garnered great responses, even making it to the site, WorldstarHipHop and racking up views all over the country. This all led to the release of his debut album, Trucker Music, and a sold out release party in June 2012 at The Beat in Uptown, Minneapolis, where Plain Pat was in attendance. Allan K. traveled to New York, to meet Grammy-winning producers, Plain Pat and Emile (Drake, Kanye West, Kid Cudi, Lana Del Rey, Mary J. Blige, Lupe Fiasco, etc) and is currently working with them on music for his next project.
Bobby Raps is a rapper/producer from St. Paul. Linking up with the South Minneapolis rap crew, Audio Perm, Bobby has made a name for himself throughout the Twin Cities. His stage presence play a huge part in the lively reputation he's earned.
