CMJ Showcase feat: Shaprece, Oyinda, Marcus Alan Ward, Tkay Maidza, SAFIA, Wonderful Humans, Okenyo

Shaprece

Drawing from an eclectic palette of musical influences, Shaprece's latest artistic direction ranges from electronic beats to orchestral arrangement, soulful vocals to ambient soundscapes. Blending digitally altered tones with sultry and smoky vocals, she has aspired to create a category to call her own. Throughout the creative process, she's gathered inspiration from the likes of Bjork, Little Dragon, and Aaliyah, among others, forming a pleasant fusion of dreamy melodies and atmospheric sounds on her new album.

London-raised Nigerian singer, songwriter, and producer.

Marcus Alan Ward

Product of a cultural upbringing, self taught multi-instrumentalist Marcus Alan Ward spent his middle and high school days in and out of bands, later discovering and being exposed to jazz, soul, hip hop, electronic music, and more obscure sounds in college. Ward began crafting music as a solo project in May of 2011 and debuted his project with dance based single Tidal Wave in September 2011. Simultaneously giving himself and the world a birthday present, his debut EP WLDFLWR_HNY was released on his birthday in January 2012, garnering early buzz locally, nationally, and internationally. The artist solidified his sound and building buzz with the release of ambient rnb/post hip-hop hybrid the Eskimo EP in April of 2013. Currently at work on his debut album, with the first single "You Do", debuting on pitchfork.com (http://pitchfork.com/reviews/tracks/16522-freeze-tag-you-do/). He remains influenced by a large range of prog rock, electronic, soul, hip-hop, and avant-garde music. Ward continues to pursue honest artistic expression and spread his dubbed prisma-chromatic, futuristic soul sound. The Cleveland,Ohio artist masterfully combines light electronics with sensual R&B flavors.

Wonderful Humans

They first crossed paths in the autumn of 2011. The setting: New York City. Fast forward to three autumns later, Brian Cag and Amanda Carl began to establish a connection that felt unprecedented. Seeing in each other more than just a significant other, Wonderful Humans was conceived. The songs feel like sonic paintings which are as vivid in the mind as when reading a most inciting book, latent with upbeat melodies that embellish the overarching storyline. The harmonies flow together like two synchronic waves, bending and bowing at just the right times. Music is the basis of this love-- and New York City is the chamber it resonates from. Wonderful Humans' infectious melodies and sounds emulate that first heart's flutter, when real love is present. This world needs more Wonderful Humans.

Neo soul mystical.
New electric biblical.
A new sound that will take your hand and lead you to The Underworld.

This is Okenyo.

AUSSIETHEATRE.COM “Okenyo…[is] a fiercely compelling presence on stage and her band’s new/old-world infused rhythms are electrifying: this is an artist to watch”.
