Ryan York aka "Jacuzzi" is a 19 year old producer from Honolulu, Hawaii.
Though he has a limited number of releases under his own name thus far, Jacuzzi's extraordinary production skill and musical composition have been tapped by some of the most popular DJs in the world, his instrumentals requested by several of 2013's most respected multi-platinum hip-hop artists.
In December 2013, Jacuzzi released his debut EP, Mizu, to over- whelming critical support and over 15,000 downloads via his website, Jacuzzi.FM. The EP received support from Bassnectar, Pretty Lights, Sinjin Hawke, Munchi, Whats So Not, JWLS, Mr. Carmack, Craze, Madeon, and many more. Produced at Avex Studios in Hawaii (Kanye's "Yeezus") and Just Blaze's StadiumRed in NYC, "Mizu" is a cinematic concoction of future bass, grime, hip-hop, and popular bass music.
Now, hot off the heels of his official remix for RCA Records' Tinashe, Jacuzzi is back with a new release featuring fellow Hawaiian producer, Mr. Carmack.
Although his unique sound sees no boundaries, New Jersey's Nadus truly excels at creating and producing fast-paced Juke, hard-hitting hip-hop, and energetic Jersey Club under the umbrella of East Coast Club music.
Nadus has come a long way since Dirty South Joe, Tim Dolla, Mike V, and the Brick Bandits family put him on the map when he was only fifteen years old. Now at twenty years old, Nadus' signature sound and masterful performances behind the decks have taken him as far as Sydney, Australia. His original productions and remixes have been released on labels like Ninjatune, Palms Out Sounds, Ghettophiles, and Kingdom's Fade To Mind Imprint. He has produced music for the Seattle rapper, Eighty4Fly and is the official DJ and producer for the rap group, NJ Rebels. Nadus is also the co-founder of the "Thread" party with Exrahk, DJ Reck, and Elete of St. Joe Louis.
Ever since he's been on the scene, Nadus has racked up a mile-long list of supporters amongst his peers of DJs and producers, including his mentor DJ Steel, Dave Nada, David Heartbreak, Munchi, DJ Sega, Nick Hook, Cobra Krames, DirtyFingers, DJ Ayres, DJ Tameil, WCKids, Luny P, Sinden, and Diplo, who even wrote a college recommendation for him.
Sam Obey aka Obey City (pronounced "oh-bee city") has a weird energy. This soft-spoken 26 year old New York native is at once a producer, deejay, label boss, tastemaker and champion of the new-New York underground. He effortless handles each role with zen-like serenity—in a lost tradition of American culture, one may have said 'suave'.
What started as casual experimentation and beat making for rappers and friends has evolved over the last 10 years into an unrelenting solo passion, resulting in a steady stream of sould-renched bedroom music that avoids trends in favor of the enduring. This is the direct product of Quincy Jones, of Tomita, of Stevie Wonder, of Mahavishnu Orchestra & undoubtably Todd Terry & Mobb Deep. It's through this new culture of producers attempting to recontexualize late 20th century soul with modern bootlegged DAWS that we can understand a subtle vein of pure melodic optimism.
Obey is humble when it comes to just about everything, but his penchant for the sounds of soul, funk and smooth jams has instilled a vibe that has grown up alongside a rapid evolving urban musical landscape. The result is glossy, shifting dance music that seeks the weird, the unrestrained, the cleverly odd.
Obey City's path really took shape in late 2009 with Atlantics, the debut release of his free net-label Astro Nautico, where he appeared alongside fellow label heads and longtime friends Kuhn and Paul Jones. Obey City's unique appropriation of nostalgic sound palettes for modern purposes led to his debut solo release 18 months later, the acclaimed Melted Magic EP, also on Astro Nautico.
2012 heralded Obey City's imperial expansion, first with his notable inclusion in Rustie's BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix followed by his first release beyond Astro Nautico: MY RVM EP on B.YRSLF Division, featuring a remix by viral sensation Baauer. Soon he was signed to the Scottish powerhouse and Warp-partner LuckyMe, producing remixes for the likes of Freshmore and Civil Music, all while continuing to promote budding producers via Astro Nautico.
The future only looks to shine brighter, with his recent work culminating in the form of two EPs to be released on LuckyMe in 2013.
Depending on the setting, and more importantly what socks he's wearing, Subset throws down sets ranging from techno to booty house and everything in between. Whether it's setting the mood in an intimate room before Photek, bringing the main stage to a frenzy after Pendulum and Caspa, or bringing a dark Brooklyn afterparty into the sunrise, Subset has proven that he can adeptly read any room and decide which tracks best fit the mood.
Since 2011, Subset has been the resident DJ of New York City's weekly Bassment Saturdays party. He has utilized Bassment Saturdays as a way of giving underground artists an outlet to perform in front of an attentive and receptive crowd. Many artists, including Alvin Risk, CRNKN, Buku, Astronomar, and Sadhu all had their NYC debuts at Bassment. Entering its third year, Bassment Saturdays has upcoming guests including some of the heaviest hitters in dubstep and trap.
With a few original tracks and remixes ready for release, Subset is poised to take his unique brand of bass music global in 2014... or he might open a retirement home for cats.
