Los Angeles songstress BANKS will release her highly anticipated debut album, GODDESS this September 9th, which is a gorgeous fourteen song collection that instantly affirms why the bewitching and beguiling singer has rapidly become one of 2014’s most exciting new artists. Since the release of her debut EP, LONDON, in 2013 BANKS has gone from being L.A.’s best kept secret to an international phenomenon who has sold-out headlining shows around the world, graced the cover of V Magazine’s music issue alongside Lorde and Haim, and landed in the Top 3 of BBC’s highly lauded Sound of 2014 poll, whose previous nominees have included Adele, Frank Ocean, Sam Smith, and more. The EP’s four luminous tracks introduced music lovers to BANKS’ dark sonic world – a place where mid-90s Aaliyah R&B meets glitch electro sparks; where the intense emotionality of early Fiona Apple meets an expressive, velveteen voice capable of wrapping itself around a perfectly- formed chorus. On GODDESS, BANKS delivers on these sounds and more. The debut is a hypnotic, visceral debut – a testament to BANKS’ core songwriting chops and her innovative production choices.
Movement are a trio from Sydney, Australia, slowly inching out of the shadows and into the light with the Spring release of their self-titled EP. Since unveiling their debut Morgan Geist (Storm Queen/Metro Area) mixed singles, Jesse Ward, Lewis Wade and Sean Walker have played a string of headline shows in Australia, as well as touring alongside Solange and DARKSIDE.
Their second single Us has clocked up over half a million plays each on YouTube and Soundcloud, while Pitchfork ordained it Best New Track. Live, Jesse and Sean balance lush, atmospheric production with live instrumentation that pushes them beyond the trappings of most electronic acts. This rich foundation sets the stage for the soulful, aching vocals of Lewis – his voice, somewhat restrained on the recordings, emerges live as a massive emotional centerpiece.
The 4-track, self-titled EP was released May 6th and the group has been taking their live show on the road internationally to support its release.
Lil Silva's current production output and live credentials seem a far cry from the Bedford-based, makeshift studio from which he exploded in 2008. Although club shows have got bigger and original/collaborative releases have got better, Lil Silva's musical influence and focus still remains: an unabashed amalgamation of the minimal machine funk of Chicago's Trax label, the aggression of early grime, a tropical resonance with soca, a semblance with the rugged darkness of modern techno and the sonic invention of The Neptunes.
It was the Seasons and Funky Flex white label that first catapulted the then 18 year-old producer to the forefront of the UK underground. Lil Silva's echoed bongo hits, brazen grime synths and hard-to-imitate marching momentum had every goon in the room on their feet. His building following quickly picked up the limited 12" Pulse X/Funky Flex blend and by 2010, the formative London imprint Night Slugs were hooked on Silva's sound, commissioning the storming 'Night Skanker EP'.
Collaborating on the dreamy 'On Your Own' track with friend and peer, Sampha, has steered Lil Silva onto an array of high profile remix work for the likes of SBTRKT, AlunaGeorge and Lana Del Rey. With what seems like an inherent ability for more composition focused music making, 2013 will see the ex-bedroom producer turn his hand to songwriting. Working on original material and collaborations with help from Sampha, Jamie Woon and BANKS to name but a few, Lil Silva will take his melody-writing talent into the club context and beyond.
