Paper Ships Presents: Manimal Vinyl w/ Sister Crayon, Papercranes, Blackbird Blackbird

August 4th marks our second show for Paper Ships, but it is also the start of a new record label showcase series we will be unveiling over the next couple months. Future Paper Ships show will highlight some of the most amazing independent record labels around that continue to challenge themselves and put out one incredible release after another. If there is something that we can promise, it is that none of these shows will be boring. Our first showcase is with one of the most exciting labels around right now, Manimal Vinyl. You may know them as the label that first broke out artists like Warpaint, Bat For Lashes, Rainbow Arabia, and more. They have also released EP’s for the likes of Duran Duran and Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros.

We are proud to have them hosting our next show, and can’t wait to see this lineup in action. We have brought on board some of Manimal’s most amazing emerging artists with Sister Crayon, Jenny O. and Rain Phoenix’s musical incarnation Papercranes. Also on the bill is Blackbird Blackbird, a San Fransisco based electronic act that is quickly getting a lot of attention.

Sister Crayon

"On 'Holy (Or)der,' Sister Crayon maximizes a sonic landscape of ethereal loops and twangy keyboards that evoke childhood music machines contrasted with Terra Lopez’s warm-deep-sad vocals (primarily words, occasionally pure instrumental sound). SC exists on that fine line of sadness and bliss, ever unstable, ever reaching across their driving methodic beats for sanctuary before the fadeout." --Sacramento Underground Music Examiner

"What you get with this band is sincerity, thoughtfulness, intense beauty, wisdom, joy, and (perhaps, best of all) music that should be at once pondered and cherished. Stumbling onto Sister Crayon is like finding a book of apocalyptic poetry in the confessional booth of an old, burned out cathedral." --SPIN.com

Papercranes

Rain Phoenix has appeared in dozens of movies, including Gus Van Sant's Even Cowboys Get the Blues and Othello. She's also lent vocals to bands like R.E.M. and Red Hot Chili Peppers. But with her musical project, papercranes, she's the one who's front and center. The collaborative work of a rotating cast of members, this experimental band is a dark blend of psych-inflected rock, folk and atmospheric melodies that conjure up comparisons to everyone from Radiohead to Warpaint.

Jenny O.

"Jenny O. just released her debut, Home EP on Manimal Vinyl. "The five-song, self-produced EP showcases Jenny O.'s flair for dreamy folk, jazz-fueled hip-hop, '60s- and '70s-style pop arrangements; the lyrics are conversational and down-to-earth, and everything seems appropriately drenched in LA sunshine." - Shockhound
"Influences ranging from jazz to the The Beatles, and a strong sense of composition across the board." - ROXY

Blackbird Blackbird

"If we used tags this post would certainly carry the ones 'dreamy,' 'woozy' and 'wonderful' in big capitals somewhere prominent as for the last little while we’ve been giving unstoppable sticky listens to the ARCADE SOUND LTD endorsed (BLACKBIRD BLACKBIRD). ‘Happy High’ takes our cloud-bothering favourite words and wears them incredibly well with its twinkling galaxy of notes and shimmering out-of-body vocals that shadow the track with a gentle detached drift." --Transparent Blog

"San Franciscan synth-pop outfit are offering a free EP, Happy High, over at their Bandcamp page. The EP is pretty short, with a running time of a little over eight and a half minutes-- but it's also pretty sweet, especially the piano-heavy closer 'Ups & Downs'." --Pitchfork
