Bring Me The Horizon

When Bring Me The Horizon finally returned home from their last world tour in December 2011, they'd been on the road for two whole years.
Their third album There Is A Hell, Believe Me I've Seen It. There Is A Heaven, Let's Keep It A Secret had proved both a critical smash and their worldwide breakthrough, smashing into the Top 20 on both sides of the Atlantic and going to Number 1 in Australia. They'd sold out shows across Europe, Asia, Australasia and North and South America. Played astonishing, show-stealing gigs everywhere from the Vans Warped Tour to Reading & Leeds Festivals. Inspired an obsessed army of devotees, not to mention an almost-as-vociferous band of haters.

Now that they had to do the hardest thing for any band in their position – essentially, the hottest breakthrough metal band on the planet – to do: nothing.

For frontman Oli Sykes, the band's first proper downtime since they formed in Sheffield in 2004 was a much-needed chance to take care of business, both of the commercial (Bring Me The Horizon signed to RCA after three albums on indie Visible Noise) and personal variety ("writing became my passion again".

Consequently, when the time came to begin work on their fourth album, Sempiternal (an old English word meaning "everlasting"), Oli found himself in a "better position and clearer mindframe than ever before – I was working at 110% whereas before it was always 50%, because there was stuff going on that was hindering me".

But he also knew that a clear head alone would not be enough to craft a truly game-changing modern rock record. This time around, Bring Me The Horizon were determined to deliver an album that – in the words of guitarist Lee Malia – was "as close to perfect as we could make it". Before, BMTH albums had often been put together on the hoof between tours, but for Sempiternal they had plenty of time and a license to experiment. It was time to rip up the rulebook and start again.

Previous BMTH albums were no strangers to electronic sounds, but this time around Oli brought in Jordan Fish, formerly of atmospheric electronic-rockers Worship, to help integrate keyboards and programming into the band's sound from the very start of the process. Initially, he was supposed to play a support role, but soon he was writing with Oli, and bouncing ideas off Lee, and slowly-but-surely he became an integral member of the band.

Jordan jokes about falling on his feet by joining BMTH just as they look likely to become one of the biggest rock bands in the world, though he's certainly paid his dues ("I've done all the shit bits of being in a band, just without anyone knowing about it…") and he also played a vital role in overhauling BMTH's sound, his electronic soundscapes adding depth and space to their raw rock power.
"We've never wanted to just be beholden to the metalcore thing," says Oli, who as boss of his own, wildly successful clothing line Drop Dead, has long defied the metal stereotype. "We always said we want to push boundaries, but this time we pulled it off. Jordan opened up a lot of stuff that we've always wanted to do, but couldn't."

"Before, we used to build up and then go into something super-heavy," says Lee. "But we've moved on a bit from that: it can still sound massive but it's not just based around a breakdown."

But they didn't stop there. Oli also changed up the way he worked, taking singing lessons, spending hours crafting perfect lyrical soundbites and even studying the science of "what makes a melody catchy".

"The idea behind Sempiternal is that we wanted every song to have a different theme musically and lyrically," says Oli. "And that whatever song you listen to, you should know what it's about, at a certain level, straight away."

And the results of Bring Me The Horizon's new approach, and the hugely intense recording sessions at Angelic Studios in Banbury ("Whenever we took a break, I could tell it was killing Oli," says Jordan, "He'd be itching to get back to work") are splattered all over Sempiternal. An album of astonishing versatility, it ranges from the controlled menace of Seen It All Before to the naked aggression of Anti-Vist; from the bubbling electronica of Can You Feel My Heart? to the metallic attack of The House Of Wolves; from the irresistibly anthemic chorus of Shadow Moses to the uncompromising fury of Go To Hell.

Meanwhile, Oli's newly-bolstered voice is a revelation, swooping from heartfelt croon to cathartic scream and all points in-between, while his lyrics grapple with both his own personal issues and wider concerns, from the attack on religion in The House Of Wolves ("I had stuff to deal with and there were a lot of people pushing me towards religion," says Oli, "But I couldn't stomach it") to giving a verbal smackdown to keyboard warriors on Anti-Vist ("The whole internet generation drives me insane," he says, "People think they've got a platform to spout any old shit").
In short, Sempiternal is here to reclaim the word "epic" from the people who save you money on your car insurance. No wonder the band is already attracting unprecedented levels of buzz, not just from the hard rock enclaves where Bring Me The Horizon have long been superstars, but from the mainstream.

Already, since their return, they've proved their unique versatility by playing – and conquering – everything from a small Sheffield Leadmill show for hardcore fans to a headline slot at Vans Warped UK to a Maida Vale set for Radio 1's Rock Week (quite a baptism of fire for new-boy Jordan).
Then, with broadsheets and music magazines alike electing BMTH as poster boys for the UK's new wave of hard rock, Radio 1 premiered Shadow Moses on daytime radio, not once but twice, lighting up Twitter and providing a rallying point for the whole rock scene in the process. It was no one-off either: weeks later, Bring Me The Horizon are still staples of the playlist.

"What must builders be thinking when they listen?" ponders Lee. "It must be weird for people who never listen to that sort of music… It's still weird for us!"

They'd better get used to it, because Lee, Oli, Jordan, bassist Matt Kean and drummer Matt Nicholls are poised to become THE rock success story of 2013. And Oli Sykes, for one, is ready for it.

"Everyone starts off listening to pop music but they get hungry for something a bit more exciting," says Oli, who was converted to the rock cause as a teenager by Linkin Park. "A whole lot of people want that – there just hasn't been a band that have done it for a while, there hasn't been that band to get people into better music. I would love Bring Me The Horizon to be that band for this generation."

Of Mice & Men

Strength often comes from starting over. In the aftermath of a disruption, calamity, or tragedy, there's a process of restoration. Southern California quintet Of Mice & Men refer to it as Restoring Force. Not only does that serve as the title for the group's third full-length album for Rise Records and follow-up to 2011 breakout The Flood, but it also sums up their unbreakable spirit. Enduring lineup shifts and a constant uphill battle to be heard, the band—Austin Carlile [lead vocals], Alan Ashby [rhythm guitars], Phil Manansala [lead guitar], Aaron Pauley [bass, vocals], and Valentino "Tino" Arteaga [drums]—emerges stronger than ever.

"What happens after a disaster? What happens after The Flood?" asks Carlile. "You return to normal. You find balance again. That's what we felt like we were doing with this album. We officially added Aaron, and this is exactly where we needed to be with our sound. We wanted this record to bring equilibrium back to our band and music. We're letting everyone know that we're here to stay. We're Restoring Force."

Embracing that mindset, they headed to House of Loud Studios in New Jersey to record with producer David Bendeth [Paramore, Breaking Benjamin] at the start of June 2013. Through intense recording sessions, they challenged themselves and expanded their signature style. As a result, they penned pummeling, passionate, and powerful anthems that teeter between searing screams and magnetic melodies.

"David is a character," smiles Carlile. "He brought out the best in us by pushing us to the absolute limit. That's why we wanted to work with him from the beginning. He worked us, shaped us, and molded us. We loved him sometimes, and we hated him others. He helped us reach a new level though."

Part of the group's ascent involved the incorporation of Pauley into every aspect of the creative process. His soaring hooks proved the perfect counterpoint to Carlile's crushing screams.

"It was the first time we had every actually recorded together," Carlile goes on. "He's our brother, and he's an incredible vocalist. I remember one night we were doing pre-production early on, and Aaron had some reservations. He was down on himself, and he didn't know if he was cut out for it. I told him, 'You're the person who delivers that final punch and emotion. You're the one who sends it home for us. Trust yourself'. The next day, he showed me 'Feels Like Forever'."

The track builds from a polyrhythmic riff into an utterly unforgettable refrain. It's artfully heavy and chaotically catchy.

"I saw Aaron's struggle in the studio, and I had the same struggle two weeks later," admits Carlile. "I broke down. I was mentally, physically, and spiritually exhausted. That song takes me back to making this record. When we finished it, I was so reassured. You can always come out of any low point."

Elsewhere on the record, "Bones Exposed" snaps from staggering guitars into a percussive onslaught led by the frontman's inimitable growl and cinematic lyrics.

"This one's heavier," he affirms. "I was bitter, angry, hurt, and wounded. It's about somebody you really don't like at the moment. At the same time, we're all broken. We're all messed up. We're all liars. We're all sinners. We're all flawed. None of us are perfect so you have to let it go at some point. It's like a cut. If you leave it alone, it heals. Otherwise, you scratch it until the bones are exposed."

Meanwhile, "Would You Still Be There?" merges the melodic and metallic seamlessly, and "You're Not Alone" seesaws between an uplifting refrain and guttural verse. The latter touches on a larger theme for Carlile.

"The theme of the record is togetherness, working together, and being a family," he reveals. "I want our listeners to know they're not alone. We're all going through it with them."

The fans won't take his words lightly. The group has become a veritable phenomenon worldwide, selling out shows across North America all the way to Australia, Europe, and beyond. The Flood reached #28 on the Billboard Top 200 and garnered praise from the New York Times, Rock Sound, Alternative Press, and more. With sales surpassing 125,000 and YouTube streams over 16,000,000, The Flood remains one of the most successful releases in 22 years of Rise Records.

In the end though, Restoring Force is a pivotal moment for Of Mice & Men that sees them gain power like never before.

"Of Mice & Men has outgrown all of us," concludes Carlile. "It's bigger than the individuals comprising it. It's bigger than the album. It has become its own thing. It's more than just a rock group. I want this album to get people thinking and talking. It's different. There are no cryptic messages. This is purely meant to move you."

Force has effectively been restored for Of Mice & Men, and they're ready to conquer.

The Story So Far

The Story So Far is a five piece pop punk band from Walnut Creek, CA formed in 2007. The lineup consists of Parker Cannon on vocals, Will Levy on guitar, Kevin Geyer on guitar, Kelen Capener on bass and backup vocals, and Ryan Torf on drums. Their debut full length "Under Soil And Dirt" was released on June 21, 2011 and is now available on Pure Noise Records

Memphis May Fire

MEMPHIS MAY FIRE have consistently pushed the envelope to redefine both themselves and the various sub-genres they've made their mark within. 2009's "Sleepwalking" full-length yielded no exception as the band ventured into the territory of Post-Hardcore / Southern Rock with no reservations. Their fresh approach to an otherwise stale scene gathered critical acclaim and found "Ghost In The Mirror" f...eatured on the both the Saw VI Soundtrack and DVD/Blu-Ray releases. Subsequent touring with the likes of Asking Alexandria, From First To Last, and Alesana facilitated the delivery of their music to the masses and established a live precedent that the band continues to build on today.

Following well-received releases on both Trustkill & Bullet Tooth, domestic/international touring success (featuring the band's first visit to Japan) and a tag as one of Revolver Magazine's "Top 25 Under 25," we're left with only one certainty; members Matt Mullins (vocals), Kellen McGregor (guitar), Ryan Bentley (guitar), Cory Elder (bass), and Jake Garland (drums) are headed somewhere fast.

In fact, it's safe to say that MEMPHIS MAY FIRE are "Sleepwalking" no longer. This move continues to broaden the band's reach and welcomes a new world of possibilities within the scope of their burgeoning career. Party death metal rockers Attila formed in their hometown of Atlanta in 2005, meeting each other at their high school and through mutual friends. Their mutual love of music (and partying) brought the guys together to form what would eventually become the fourth imprint on the Artery Foundation/Razor & Tie joint venture, Artery Recordings.

When the guys set out to name their newly formed band, they knew they were looking for a simple, one word name that didn't imply the typical death metal cliché terms such as "blood, dying, and darkness." One day they found themselves in a bookstore passing around a book about Attila the Hun, and so Attila was born.

Over the years Attila has gone through a few lineup changes, but founding members Fronz and Sean have remained a constant staple. For the past two years, the band has consisted of Fronz (vocals), Nate (guitar), Chris (guitar), Sean (drums) and Paul (bass). This lineup really brought together Attila's sound and image that they are known for today. The band began touring full time and as of summer 2010, has been on the road almost non-stop for two years.

Attila released two prior albums, Fallacy and Soundtrack To A Party, on Statik Factory Records, and have previously toured with Arsonists Get All The Girls, See You Next Tuesday, Chelsea Grin, America Me, and We Are The End. RAGE, Attila's Artery Recording/Razor & Tie debut will be released May 11, 2010, and is a unique mix of heavy music infused with elements that make each song fun to listen to and put the listener in the mood to party. "The title can be perceived in many ways, one obviously being a state of extreme anger, and the other being the slang meaning – to party! I have always been a fan of play-on-words and double meanings, and that's what drew me to this title more than anything," Fronz commented.

While Attila certainly evokes thoughts of partying, the band is trying to expand the public's immediate thoughts about party metal through RAGE. They describe the album and their overall take on music as a way of letting loose and having fun, and allowing the listener to take away that message in whatever context they find fitting. As Fronz said, "All we want is for the listener to have a fun experience, and that is the main message behind RAGE."

STICK TO YOUR GUNS is more than a band, they have evolved into a movement that focuses on individual self expression, the desire to create a better life for yourself and an emphasis on the importance of family and treating others with respect.


Bursting at the seams with a vibrant energy and overall positivity comes this Orange County sensation, who provide a message of hope and that could serve as the soundtrack to the new hardcore/punk revolution. Visionary Jesse Barnett (vocals) was originally inspired to form a band that would provide him with a medium to project his view points and reflect his musical influences and he continues to do just that to this very day bringing a stable of accomplished musicians on board. After four full-length albums, a number of worldwide tours and legions of diehard followers the band has come full circle and in 2012 delivers the most important effort of their already stellar career. It's all who we are as a whole and its important for us to understand this. What's inside of you is what is happening outside in the world. How we can look at everything thats going on around us and think that we are at a complete disconnect from it, is beyond me.


"We also try to live the words we speak. It's become more and more important to me as we have moved forward through this band's life, that we do the things we are saying. We try to give back any moment we can. This band has become more than just a band for me. I very much try to be the words that I write. I'm not a perfect. I am far from it, but what helps me more than anything is when a kid comes to me and says 'hey man my life was a wreck and I was in a downward spiral and this bands music has picked me up'. This is what helps me because I know what thats like and I have bands that have done the same things for me so to be that band for someone else is an honor.


"I feel like this band has progressed through its life like I have through mine. Every person on this earth is searching for things trying to find out who they are, where they belong and ways that they can express themselves. With the new album, not to sound to generic, we really took inventory of our music and for me at least I took inventory of my life, my flaws and mental vices. This is me trying to let it all go and find whats truly important to me and that is my friends, family and all of humanity. Society interests me in ways that I previously never knew. The things that people endure and the stuff people bounce back from and the ways we progress through science and technology amazes me. I love this world even though here are absolutely shitty things about it. I'm trying very hard to change my view and always trying to find ways to give back as much as possible."


In 2012, STICK TO YOUR GUNS gives to the world a diamond that shines bright and exudes a proclamation of hope and inspiration that could even impact the most cynical.

We all face challenges. Often those challenges are coming directly from the mirror or from the people we trust to love and care about us the most. Many of us love and hate ourselves in equal measure. But through all of the adversity, struggle and hardship, there's a chosen few rise above to accept themselves and each other. We all have issues. We must identify them. We must overcome them.

It is with this in mind that the band ISSUES was born, united by the idea that self-doubt is the disease and music is the cure. Issues arrive on Rise Records with a bold mission statement, which is to be themselves. They aren't worried about fitting into any scene, nor bending their sound to the contrived conformity of other bands. Music industry politics haven't dictated what their songs sound like. Their talent is undeniable and their drive is equally unshakeable.

Even with his excellent R&B/pop solo work in development, Tyler Carter's fans knew that his voice wouldn't be absent from the modern metalcore scene for long and true to form, the former Woe, Is Me frontman has returned together with a career-defining new band.

Carter is a creative visionary who goes in hard with everything he does. Co-frontman Michael Bohn is the guy keeping everyone laughing with his good-natured vibe and good-humor, offering boundless creative energy and optimism as well. Bassist Cory Ferris is the most business-minded of the bunch and extremely levelheaded when it comes to any sort of crisis control within the group. Drummer Case Snedecor is intensely devoted to building new skills with his instrument and anchored by his Christian faith. Then there's guitarist AJ Rebollo, who spends endless hours communicating with the fans Issues have rapidly gathered in their short time as a band.

"We have learned more about communication and professionalism as a band," Carter explains, acknowledging the time and work they've put in paying dues with other bands and projects. "Everyone has a role. We stick to those roles and communicate together. Everything is open. We all know the system better now. We've got this on lock."

Issues have crafted a sound, a manifesto, a stage show and an image that is the proverbial "next level," filled with steady purpose and bursting at the seams with energized emotion. Issues put it all on the table: their own brokenness, their own doubt. They refashion those emotions into self-empowering weapons to help both themselves and others conquer their troubles and move forward with strength and positivity.

Issues debut EP, Black Diamonds, announces their arrival with confidence and power. Issues has made cautionary tales like "Princeton Ave." their stock and trade, detailing what can go wrong in someone's life when they suffer from abuse or isolation. "King of Amarillo" set the Internet ablaze when it was unleashed upon the public. "Love Sex Riot" (featuring Chris "Fronz" Fronzak from Attila) and the EP's title track are sure to become crowd-favorites, with bands singing along around the world.

Kids that mosh at Vans Warped Tour, metalheads who their heads at Rock Star Mayhem and mainstream acolytes who sing-a-long to Top 40 can all get behind Issues, whose sound incorporates seemingly disparate elements in a way that suddenly makes perfect sense together.

As a band, they put every ounce of their God-given energy into their music for the benefit of their fans. "We want to change lives and see the world as we're doing it," says Carter. "We want to be iconic."

With a "scene" that is increasingly overcrowded by bands with no clear vision or anything relevant to say to their audience, Issues are primed to breakthrough quickly thanks to their style, substance and forceful dedication to their craft. The guys in Issues are all Black Diamonds themselves. They can relate to the struggles their fans are facing, because they've faced them themselves.

A black diamond is mysterious, dark, edgy but also extremely beautiful; it's the perfect way to sum up Issues music and mission. "We are all Black Diamonds in the rough. Our fans are all Black Diamonds as well," Carter declares.

They stole the professor's books, the gutter's good looks, and now they want your kids. Cultured on punk's brashness, metal's brutality, and confidence born in the cracks of Ingelwood's side walks. Here you have it- LETLIVE. Four years after their sophmore release, the expansive and raucous Speak Like You Talk, LETLIVE. has suffered the growing pains that is the burden of any artist. Having to accept the reality that the life of the musician is only becoming harder to realize let alone manage. That there will be no Ivy league M.B.A. to fall back on. The gap on the resume won't be easily explained away. It is all glory for the chosen few whose pedigree ensures the successes of top 40 radio darlings. After four years and many a lineup change the band has coalesed into a few young men well aware of the crap shoot that is the modern music industry. While media moguls and their minions are scrambling for swill, like pigs at a trough, frenzied for one last taste of the fiscal glory they've enjoyed by hocking cardboard and paper mache' to the lowest common denominator...Letlive are betting on themselves, and they are all in, with far from nothing to lose.

Lands will be laid waste if Letlive's hunger is not satisfied for the God's of good music demand it; sacrements of swagger, sacrifice of the masses. With the blessings of former tour mates, Bleeding Through, LETLIVE. will be bringing the blood and sweat of their violently cathartic live show to the studio this summer, bracing for a winter release that is sure to serve as a true testament to something much greater than a "good album". These men exhibit a potential the arts have been desperately pining for for far too long. This is the assurance of change, the tipping point of a revolution.

The tireless and tour-hungry hardcore loyalists in LA's TERROR, spearheaded by the endless enthusiasm of frontman Scott Vogel, have earned quite a reputation since forming at the turn of the millennium. Their melding of no-frills breakneck hardcore and the fervor of new generation metal bridges the gap between young and old, and it makes for one hell of a pit no matter what city or stage the band leaves in ruin. Vogel has been a key figure in the scene's survival, having given up a normal home life to slug it out on the road despite broken limbs, slipped discs and everything else that comes with hosting a TERROR show.

Century Media Records has been a long-time admirer of Vogel and the band, and the label is thrilled to now officially welcome them to its increasingly diverse worldwide roster and announce the summer release of TERROR's third full-length, The Damned, The Shamed on June 10th. This vicious slab of brutality was produced by the renowned Zeuss (Hatebreed, Shadows Fall) and is sure to please the band's diehard fanbase, while garnering a new legion of young maniacal supporters. Vogel further comments on the newly signed deal: ""After a good run with Trustkill and several cool releases TERROR felt it was time for a fresh push and to attack from a whole new angle. As synonymous as the band has become with stellar live shows, records like Lowest of the Low, One with the Underdogs and Always the Hard Way have earned TERROR a reputation for consistency. No matter what the circumstances, Vogel has surrounded himself with talent rich in passion. A DIY attitude has often been a common bond between band members, and the current line-up is no exception. New guitarist Martin Stewart made invaluable contributions to the purist, no B.S. approach heard on Donnybrook's Lions In This Game, Doug Weber (guitar) and Nick Jett (drums) have been with the band from the start, and Jonathan Buske (bass) gave Always the Hard Way an effective lumbering beat.

If anything, TERROR's goal is to bring back the good natured release of circle pits and stage dives as well as the finger-pointing anthems that were once integral to the hardcore scene. In its infancy, the band represented everything overzealous bouncers hated, and Vogel encouraging the crowd to "elevate the maximum stagedive potential" didn't always sit well with the LA venues they packed with sweaty kids fed-up with aimless music. Nonetheless, thanks to word of mouth and the strength of songs like "Keep Your Distance" and "What Have We Done," the band soon found itself touring partners with everyone from As I Lay Dying to Hatebreed, amongst a slew of others. It is this drive and desire that has cemented TERROR into the hearts of music fans worldwide and made them royalty within the touring front. The fact that they're direct support to the reunited Earth Crisis right now speaks volumes. Time off for TERROR is considered time away from their hardcore family across the globe, something that they cannot live without, so rest assured, the years to come hold many more releases and live appearances worldwide.

Rest assured that, The Damned, The Shamed is the definitive hardcore album of 2008. Consider this your only warning.

A Skylit Drive

A Skylit Drive is a six-piece post-hardcore band from Lodi/Galt California. They released their first EP, titled She Watched The Sky, with Tragic Hero Records in January 2007 and the follow-up full length album Wires… And the Concept of Breathing on May 20, 2008. Now signed to Fearless Records, the band has released their second full length, Adelphia, on June 9, 2009.

Hands Like Houses

Hands Like Houses are a fresh and explosive 6 piece from Canberra, Australia. With a rapidly expanding international fanbase, the band has captivated audiences with their electric blend of technical, effects- heavy songwriting with post-hardcore passion and stage presence. Driven by rich lyricism and melodic, emotive vocals in the vein of Emarosa and The Getaway Plan, the band presents a complex and finely crafted mix of guitar and electronics, drawing from a broad range of influence including Thrice, The Receiving End of Sirens and Closure in Moscow.

The closing of 2011 saw the band sign to American record label Rise Records, with their highly anticipated debut album 'Ground Dweller' subsequently announced to be released worldwide on March 13th.

HLH traveled to the USA in 2010 and 2011 to record 'Ground Dweller' with Cameron Mizell of Chango Studios (Woe, Is Me, Sleeping With Sirens, Oceana). The subsequent single releases, 'This Ain't No Place For Animals', and ʻLion Skin (feat. Tyler Carter and Jonny Craig)' earned the band over 5,000 independent single sales via iTunes during 2011, and their most recent single 'Antarctica', released on Youtube through Rise Records, has amassed almost 200,000 views in its first month. Along with the band's self-produced acoustic versions of 'Lion Skin' and ʻThe Sowerʼ, their YouTube channels have seen over three quarters of a million views, growing daily.

Boasting a dedicated and fast-growing international fanbase, built through years of personally managing their social networks and independent promotion and touring, Hands Like Houses will release their hotly anticipated debut album 'Ground Dweller' on March 9th in Australia (March 13th worldwide through Rise Records). Buoyed by exceptional online pre-order numbers for a debut release, the record is well on track to break into the Billboard Top 200 and Heatseeker charts in the US in its first week.

To date, the band has supported a number of notable acts from Australia and around the world, including The Getup Kids (USA), As Tall As Lions (USA), The Getaway Plan (AUS), Dream On Dreamer (AUS), Break Even (AUS), Hopes Die Last (ITA) and Tonight Alive (AUS).
