In This Moment
One group that has definitely paid their fair share of dues is the Southern California based quintet IN THIS MOMENT who, through hard work, resiliency and an undying worldwide touring schedule have propelled themselves to the top of the heap of the metal pantheon. They have now returned with their most dynamic and focused offering, which quickly proves that this unit has greatly matured well beyond their years.
IN THIS MOMENT spent the early part of 2010 at The Wolve's Den studio once again with acclaimed producer Kevin Churko (Ozzy Osbourne, Five Finger Death Punch) recording A Star-Crossed Wasteland, an album hailed by Alternative Press as "One of The Most Anticipated Releases of 2010."
The group are extremely excited to be performing on this summer's much anticipated Rockstar Mayhem Tour playing on the Mayhem Festival Stage alongside Korn, Rob Zombie and Atreyu. This tour will mark the start of the group's official, massive worldwide touring cycle.
Chris Howorth (guitars) further states: "The writing process for A Star-Crossed Wasteland was different than on our previous records. This time we had more of a plan and we knew we wanted to write darker heavier songs while still keeping our melodic side. We started working on new music last August right after Warped Tour ended and wrote continuously for five months to get as many song ideas on tape as possible. We ended up with about 15 demo songs. Once we got into the studio with Kevin we dissected everything again to make sure everyone was happy with the arrangements and then started tracking.
"For us, using Kevin Churko was a no brainer, we had such a great experience making The Dream that we didn't even consider using anyone else. I've said it before and I will say it again, Kevin is the man. He is like the Gandolf the Grey or Yoda of producing. He has so much knowledge and is so creative musically we feel like magic happens when we work together.
"I am extremely happy with the end result. We made a record that shows who we are and what we are really about. We feel like it's our defining statement. We really put a lot of effort into making sure the guitars were massive and the drums were slamming while still retaining the depth and melodic layers in the songs. Vocally and lyrically Maria was very emotional and coming from a darker place than on previous albums, and she really poured her heart out and as usual you can tell that it's 100% genuine."
One always hears the same old adage growing up: "believe in your dreams, because dreams really do come true." Well, this statement perfectly defines the life of IN THIS MOMENT's frontwoman, Maria Brink, who always believed that she would become a rock star, and overcome all of the obstacles that stood in her way while having to escape an overall non-positive environment.
Brink, an Albany, NY native, refused to let any of this deter her from achieving her lifelong goal and soon embarked for Los Angeles to begin her musical career. After a number of odd jobs and failed creative partnerships her life soon took a sudden turn upon meeting guitarist Chris Howorth in 2005, as the two immediately realized that they had something special together. This union would soon be rounded out by Jeff Fabb (drums), Blake Bunzel (guitars) and Jesse Landry (bass) to form IN THIS MOMENT, who just three years later performed to a sold-out crowd at the renowned Madison Square Garden opening for Ozzy Osbourne, ultimately proving dreams do come true.
Their invigorating mixture of metal and hard rock quickly caught the attention of metal and hard rock fans alike. The diversity and depth was refreshing and simply undeniable. In 2010, they continue to carve out their own unique and exhilarating chapter in the hard rock genre, laying the foundation for an extremely bright future. Original bassist Jesse Landry left the band after Warped Tour in 2009 to pursue non music related endeavors but Kyle Konkiel quickly joined the fold and instantly became a perfect fit. This group is collectively defined by their undying belief in themselves and this confidence and strength is conveyed perfectly through their new material.
For IN THIS MOMENT, the dream was always to become a worldwide phenomenon and that is something that will never fade, especially with this new effort. If you haven't heard of IN THIS MOMENT, it won't be long until you do because this band is at the brink of greatness.
Faster than you can say heavy fucking metal, The Butcher Babies have
clawed their way to the top of the Hollywood music scene to become the
undisputed darlings of the Sunset Strip. Now, they are poised to take
on the rest of the world.
Fronted by Carla Harvey and Heidi Shepherd, and backed by Henry Flury
on lead guitar (Amen), Jason Klein on bass (Azdachao), and Chris
Warner on drums (Scars of Tomorrow), the Butcher Babies dish out
brutal grooves that attack the crowd during performances that play out
like a slaughter house carnival ride.
Rock Journalist Keith Valcourt recently hailed the Butcher Babies as
"The Hottest Band in the World" in his review of a show. "The Butcher
Babies deliver a loud crashing blend of heavy metal, punk and thrash
that recalls Pantera" notes Valcourt, adding "their stage show
embodies the horror antics of Alice Cooper and Rob Zombie. Carla and
Heidi don't merely sing: they assault the crowd with a blinding flash
of aggression and abuse. And the crowd loves them for it."
The perfect anti heroes for today's lackluster corporate music scene,
The Butcher Babies are answering the demand for a resurgence of the
days when going to a rock show was an event with their blistering
combination of theatrical presence and balls out metal.
Devour the Day
Formed in 2012, DEVOUR THE DAY is born from the brain trust of Joey Chicago (Bass, Vocals, Songwriter) and Blake Allison (Lead singer, Guitar, Songwriter and Producer). Having much success with the band Egypt Central, Blake and Joey sought to break out on their own, writing and producing music without compromise.
Joey explains, "Our lives got to a point that we had lost trust, we lost our
compassion, feeling and our way." The water was so murky we didn't know which way was up." What we did know is that we should keep writing and keep fighting because that was the truth and our center."
What transpired is a new album scheduled for release May 7, 2013.
Painting a picture in listeners imagination is what this songwriting duo does best. Joey continues, "While our songs are very personal to our experiences we are very aware to keep it open for interpretation. There is nothing more gratifying when a fan explains how our songs help them in their lives. It's humbling."
Giving perspective Blake states, "the process of writing this record is something totally different than what we had done before. The pressure was enormous and we felt that every decision we made needed to be perfect. There was no room for mistakes. We needed to make choices that were sometimes very difficult but once made it felt like the weight we had been carrying got lighter brick by brick."
Look for DEVOUR THE DAY to hit the road in early 2013 in support of their new album.
All Hail The Yeti
Lurking in the shadows of your worst nightmare lives a mystery of terror, a mythical beast in pursuit of your soul, run but you will never hide from this inescapable fate that is, YETI.
Bringing the brutality from the backwoods of hell to Hollywood, Connor Garritty (vocals), KJ Duval (guitar), Glendon Crain (drums), and Nick Diltz (bass), bring years of experience to this round table.
Like true pioneers of metal, YETI bleeds the blood of veterans who have molded their experiences from past projects and influences. together they have toured with the likes of staind, chimera, in this moment, 36 crazyfists, god forbid, misery signals, jonathan davis, as I lay daying and soilwork just to name a few. They have played in touring bands such as loser (island), the feds (capitol) new dead radio (mediaskare), godhead (cement shoes), and hollywood undead (a&m, octone). with all of their combined experience, there is no denying the capability of these seasoned professional musicians
A journey of escape from a metaphorical monster through streams of swamp-like guitars, spastic transitions of slow to heavy drumming and horror-filled screams, have given birth to a sound that brutally intertwines Pantera-esque southern metal grooves with hostile doses of grimy hardcore. Tales of such beasts don't live solely in the sounds of YETI, in the track "Deep Creek" lyrics read, "Ten feet tall with eyes of fire burning bright, awful stench like garbage and rotting flesh...listen here a story unfolds tonight, say a prayer now learn a lesson in fright", the concept deriving from vocalist Connor's childhood obsession with the creature. A force to be reckoned with, the live performance of YETI makes you wonder where they've been hiding all of these years.
Lots of fun and no regrets, but nothing compares to the feeling of writing music that comes from everyone involved with the project. As a band we aren't afraid to try everyones ideas in order to reach the best possible outcome...The creative process is just as much fun as the end result!!!" Proving that every end can result in a positive start, YETI is currently in the studio recording an 8-song demo and will be performing throughout Southern California and the Northwest in 2008. Words do no justice, let the beast speak for itself.
Before the Mourning
Before The Mourning signals a new dawn for heavy music. On its debut EP, Remembrance, the Los Angeles quartet—Adam Ryan [Vocals], Johnny Death (JD) [Guitar], Nikki Stringfield [Guitar], and Phil Gonyea [Drums]—siphons infectious, invasive melodies through destructive modern thrash. It's a corrosive concoction that's as catchy as it is deadly, and you'll remember it for a long time to come...
The group's genesis traces back to a longstanding friendship between the members. They've all been around the block in the close-knit Hollywood scene. Ryan and JD were in The Kill Corps, signed to Virgin Records, and Gonyea founded the fan favorite Instinct of Aggression. Naturally, they'd gigged together countless times, and there was a mutual respect in place. However, in December 2011, Gonyea approached JD about jamming for the hell of it. The sessions proved instantly explosive and the decision was made to go all out. After contacting Ryan about singing the trio
created their first track "Dismember" after meeting Stringfield at NAMM a month later, Before The Mourning was born, releasing "Remembrance" for free via Facebook in August 2012.
Merging the singer's honest lyrical approach with intricate technical metal, they carved out a niche of their own quickly. "This is breakup music for tough guys," jests JD. "Seriously, each word Adam says is true. There's nothing fake about it. It's personal and emotional, but it's also heavy." That's loud and clear on the first single "Dead To You". A chugging riff pummels in tandem with a tight groove as Ryan slips from a near whisper into an abrasive scream. About the song, JD explains, "It's about a relationship that can't work no matter how hard you try. Sometimes,
you have to let things be. Even though you want it to come together, it never will."
Aside from the vitriolic breakup anthem, the title track "Before The Mourning" boasts an uplifting plea, looking at loss from the other side of the coin. Tying into the band's name, the song stands emblematic of their dynamics. "We want to convey a positive message too. Remember what life was like before you lost someone? You have to enjoy those experiences and cherish them. That shit can really tear people up. We've all lost somebody, we don't want to focus on the fact they're gone. We want to focus on the good times, that's the double entendre within the band name."
That duality doesn't only permeate the band's sound, but the performances as well. In previous bands, they've shared the stage with everyone from Snot and DevilDriver to Trivium and Taking Dawn. As a result, their live show is a beast of its own. Ultimately, it's about a release for Before The Mourning and anyone who listens. "I could go to any metal show and have some guy scream at me about how pissed he is at the world," concludes JD. "The world is what you make it. We want people to have fun and release some of that tension because we do the same thing."
