January 19th: Music of Paul Motian
The Alternative Guitar Summit, founded in 2010, is a yearly summit of daring, inventive players who emphasize new and unusual approaches to the guitar. The music we present celebrates the guitar's enormous range, beyond style or genre.
If you love improvisation, spontaneity, beautiful melodies, nasty funk, shockingly surreal soundscapes, wild abandon, righteous distortion, elliptical chords, dreamy sound clouds, and the joy of surprise, this festival is for you.
It's an amazing experience to see so many wizards at work in one place. There is no player alive who wouldn't learn something from this aggregation. Ecstatic moments will be in abundance all weekend long.
The Fourth Annual Alternative Guitar Summit is our most ambitious yet, and features a lineup that literally seems too good to be true.
This Evening will be an especially moving night. Numerous guitarists, some of whom played with Paul, will choose two of his songs to perform. Paul Motian actually played guitar, and was perhaps one of the last founding fathers of jazz to include guitar players, often more than one, in his groups. He left us in 2012, but his presence will be very much alive in the spirit of this music.
