January 17th: Trios Focusing on Evolving Concepts in Rhythm
The Alternative Guitar Summit, founded in 2010, is a yearly summit of daring, inventive players who emphasize new and unusual approaches to the guitar. The music we present celebrates the guitar's enormous range, beyond style or genre.
If you love improvisation, spontaneity, beautiful melodies, nasty funk, shockingly surreal soundscapes, wild abandon, righteous distortion, elliptical chords, dreamy sound clouds, and the joy of surprise, this festival is for you.
It's an amazing experience to see so many wizards at work in one place. There is no player alive who wouldn't learn something from this aggregation. Ecstatic moments will be in abundance all weekend long.
The Fourth Annual Alternative Guitar Summit is our most ambitious yet, and features a lineup that literally seems too good to be true.
This evening will focus on evolving concepts of rhythm. Four players who have mastered rhythmic concepts in different ways will play a short set. Miles Okazaki works with South Indian rhythm; Will Bernard works with many of New Orleans finest groove-masters; Liberty Ellman has absorbed new languages through his work with Henry Threadgill, Greg Osby, African, and funk music; and David Gilmore, who early on worked with Steve Coleman, has conjoined numerous traditions along the African diaspora.
