She Keeps Bees
She Keeps Bees is a blues rock band from Brooklyn, New York, consisting of Jessica Larrabee on vocals and guitar and Andy LaPlant on drums.
The duo formed in 2006, while Larrabee was recording an album as a solo artist under the name She Keeps Bees ("bees" coming from her surname) and met LaPlant while bar-tending. They have self-produced/released three records as a band since forming and have toured both the US and Europe with artist such as Joy Formidable and Sharon Van Etten. Larabee has also been a guest vocalist for Sharon van Etten and on Groove Armada's Grammy-nominated album Black Light.
The Guardian said that "they're like the White Stripes in reverse." The New York Times compared her to PJ Harvey, but added that "far from Ms. Harvey's theatrical poise, Ms Larrabee is loose, vehement and unchoreographed, jittering around the stage." Drowned in Sound said of Larrabee that "she has amazing control over her vocals, able to simultaneously be fiery and reserved, seductive and vaguely crude." Fellow Brooklyn musician Sharon van Etten said "she has one of the best voices I have ever heard and she has more soul in one finger than most female singers have in our scene."
"For L.A. show-goers, Liv Marsico is a familiar face, even if she's behind a drum kit most of the time. Her resumé is stacked; it boasts her percussion duties for several local bands, including Stone Darling, and, most recently, drumming in Gothic Tropic and providing additional vocals for Tapioca & the Flea. As Liphemra, she has finally stepped out on her own. Drawing the name from the concept of "ephemera," Marsico's solo project is an appropriate amalgam of mysteriously ambient swirls with songs like the haunting yet pulsating "Young." Although electronic-based, the multi-instrumentalist in her also embodies elements of gothic, psychedelic rock and jazz for a textured cushion underneath her bright vocals. Liphemra's experimental direction isn't too shocking considering her past rhythmic explorations with others, but it's certainly an enticing listen." - Seraphina Lotkhamnga, Buzzbands.LA
"Liphemra's got jazz in her veins-- that lack of constraint imposed by logic, that blend of compromise and individualism." - Kai Flanders, LA Weekly
Dark Furs is a female-fronted independent rock band. Founded in East Los Angeles, a chance connection in 2011 between UK-raised vocalist Suzanne May and LA native Chad Philipps sparked an immediate songwriting partnership. They mix intricate melody lines and commanding vocals with dark and dreamy instrumentals to create their own brand of "Mood Rock." In 2013, the duo headed into the studio to record their self-titled EP with producer Dan Long (Henry Clay People, Local Natives) which BuzzBands.LA described as "a sophisticated reverie" and landed them on multiple Bands to Watch lists. They recently completed the recording of their follow-up EP at Jim Henson Studios with producer Nico Essig, slated for a Spring release. Dark Furs is ready to kick off 2014 with new music, videos, and an international tour.
