TRUTH, Dubsworth, Johnny5
101 6th St
San Francisco, California (CA), 94103
This event is 21 and over
The theory that isolation breeds creativity has never been as apt as it is for Truth, a dubstep outfit hailing from one of the world's most southern cities.
Truth, undoubtedly New Zealand's greatest Dubstep export; have been making a huge impact around the world with their heavy bassline riddims. Truth have a style that defies categorization; encompassing an array of melodies, vocals and spacious beats that range from half-step stompers to the deeper profound realms of sound; all with one common element which underpins every track; a heavy bassline riddim that lays sheer force on any system heavy enough to handle it.
Truth's dubplates have been receiving vast DJ support from around the globe with artists including; Mala, Skream, Benga and Mary Anne Hobbs to mention a few, with their beats being dropped at shows from venues as far away as Club Love in New York City to DMZ in London, from Double Happy in NZ to Sonar in Spain, as well as featuring on Radio shows including the BBC's Radio One and 'Rinse FM'.
Dubsworth - ( Dubs Alive Records, TUBA)
Known for his dynamic performances ranging from deep dub funk, to heavy, hard rocking dubstep, Dubsworth is a musician and producer who has been involved in the Bay Area’s Dubstep scene for more than 7 years. Having performed with over 50 different acts beginning as a drummer and blues guitarist at the age of 15, his music draws from a diverse range of styles including Rock, Jazz, Dub/Reggae, and Funk. After finishing Berklee School of Music on bass guitar, Dubsworth moved to San Francisco. He quickly became known as one of the first dubstep producers to ever play their own instruments over dubstep. This live sound spoke to many of the prominent dubstep producers and launched Dubsworth into classic collaborations and epic live sets. He continued as the co-founder and CEO of Dubs Alive recordings, a label focused around future dubwize music. In 2010, his primary live project, The Spit Brothers, were official performers at SXSW in the same year were awarded Best Dubstep Ambassadors in the SF Bay Guardian. In early 2012, Dubsworth's tune he co-produced with Antiserum "Droid Prom" was featured on an episode of CSI Miami. Now in 2013 his rootsy blend of organic and synthetic continues to spread, catering to a broad audience, and recently charting in both the Reggae/Dub and Dubstep worlds.
If you reside in Northern California and frequent dubstep/bass music events, you almost certainly recognize the face behind the layers of wobbling bass, crunchy drums, and hypnotic melodies. An Oakland, CA resident, by way of Chicago, Johnny5 cut his teeth as an MC and hip-hop producer in both cities, sharing stages with the likes of independent legends Typical Cats as well as major acts including Raekwon and Devin the Dude.
Upon moving to Oakland in 2005, Johnny5 began to take in the diverse, quickly evolving sounds pulsating throughout the Northern California music scene. Already having an extensive background in hip-hop, reggae, and electronic music, it was only natural that Johnny would embrace the dubstep genre and begin to cultivate his own sound, taking elements from each of these musical cultures. After a series of mixes that remained vastly unheard, the world began to take notice after his first official release, "Johnny 5 Alive."
In May of 2010 he co-founded San Francisco's most popular dubstep weekly, "Ritual Dubstep," every Thursday starting at Anu bar and now residing in the catacombs at Temple night club. This event unexpectedly blossomed from a small, intimate party, featuring mainly locals, into a massive nightclub production each week - but still true to the gritty and grimy sounds that made the party what it is. Ritual has been honored to host international dubstep stars such as Truth (New Zealand), Ajapai (Japan), and Wedge (UK), as well as Bay Area legends including Antiserum, Matty G, and DJG.
Besides handling booking, promotion, and organization for Ritual, Johnny5 has kept busy by doing two Northwest tours (with Bay Area heavyweights Megalodon and Los Angeles DJ/producer Bodie), releasing several mixes (available at www.soundcloud.com/johnny5dubstep), and polishing up his production, both as a solo artist and as a member of the duo Splatterface (alongside Chris "Audiobomb" Rice).
With an arsenal of forthcoming original tunes, a vast collection of rare and exclusive tracks, and uncanny ability to read a crowd's mood, Johnny5 continues to spread his unique blend of filthy bass music styles to dance floors and festivals around the West Coast and worldwide!
