Del the Funky Homosapien
Hailing from Oakland, California, Del and his crew, the Hieroglyphics came out as a markedly non-gansta response to a burgeoning West Coast scene. After being put on at the tender age of 17 by his cousin Ice Cube, Del released two records on Elektra, I Wish My Brother George Was Here (1991) and No Need For Alarm (1993). Despite record sales in the hundreds of thousands, he recorded a third album, Future Development, which was never commercially released. Del parted with Elektra and started work on the Hieroglyphics family album, 3rd Eye Vision (Hiero Imperium, 1998). Hiero went on the road and toured incessantly in support of the album for much of 1998. Del also spent a good portion of his time drawing, practicing Japanese, and playing mass amounts of video games. Finally ready to unleash a new record on the world, Del comes with BOTH SIDES OF THE BRAIN. Seventeen tracks of pure Del. He says of his work on this album: Ive had complete control. At times, Del has felt restrained by the formulas in hip hop and the expectations fans place upon emcees who have had hits. I wish that I had the same freedom that someone like Bjork has when she puts out an album. Apart from collaborations with PrincePaul, El-P (Company Flow), and help from a few of his Hiero co-horts (A-plus, Casual, Domino) Del handled the majority of production on this album. By staying true to himself, Del has earned legions of adoring fans. He may have said it best in his classic, Mistadobalina..when he declared, its all in the mind and the heart. Indeed.
Shocking, hilarious, sometimes revolting, and yet completely endearing, the Flatbush Zombies are a genuine mystery in a musical landscape where few still exist. Meechy Darko and Juice, Brooklyn bred youth with a penchant for gold grills, Charles Manson and dropping acid, make up the high energy trio alongside producer and lifelong friend Erick Arc Elliott. The Zombies rose out of complete obscurity on the back of a synth heavy, weed laced banger entitled "Thug Waffle," an ode to marijuana and breakfast foods which immediately propelled them to the forefront of New York's fresh crop of talent. Their seamless recipe of can't-look-away visual appeal and deft lyricism had them opening for Slaughterhouse and Schoolboy Q within a month while peaking the interest of everyone from Lana Del Rey to VICE, and garnering them a show stealing guest spot on the first A$AP Rocky single, "Bath Salt." Their first full length mixtape, D.R.U.G.S. (July 2012), released with over 50,000 downloads in the first week and provides the backbone for their hypnotically abrasive and off the wall live show.
Initially a trio formed in the spring of 2006, Bodega in a few months has become one of the rising stars of the jamband scene today. Based out of Philadelphia and West Chester, PA., the group's signature blend of funk, jazz, breakbeat, and afro/latin rhythms creates a sound that is entirely their own. All the members combined share a magic chemistry, and their infectious grooves and highly praised improvisational skills lead to immediate dance reactions from listeners, and uncontrollable smiles. Bodega has performed with or shared the stage (as a group or individuals) with members of Brothers Past (Rick Lowenberg), Mike Greenfield (Disco Biscuits,JM2..), Perpetual Groove, MJ Project, Sonny Rollins, Gerald Albright, Elliott Levin and many others. Despite their young age, Bodega is already playing some of the top venues in the club scene, often with groups twice their age, and often playing with twice the energy. Bodega has performed as a group or individually all over Philadelphia (Grape Street, Chris's Jazz Cafe, Tritone, TLA, Zanzibar Blue, 5 Spot, ...), New York City (The Knitting Factory, Lion's Den), and has covered alot of ground in Pennsylvania (The Brass Lantern, Appalacian Brewing Company, Perkasie Jazz Festival). We are all influenced highly by jazz, funk, electronica, world rhythms, and anything that grooves. Check the myspace for shows, and come out and see us live, until then you havn't heard us yet.
