Soul Summit Free Dance Party: DJs Sloppy White, Dave Mata, & Duke Grip
SOUL SUMMIT STARTED AS AN IDEA...
...in late 2009 after walking around the city and seeing numerous flyers for soul nights. An idea formed. Why not have one night with a delegate from each soul group/crew to celebrate the different types of early soul sounds currently being represented in the city? The idea sprang into action and soon we had three 'residents', Dave Mata, Duke Grip, and Sloppy White. With these three DJs at the core, we also included a rotating roster of guests each month. The original purpose was to challenge attendees with different sounds and to not have a solidified format. Most important, the night is not about the guests but above all the music. With no preference to 'rare' records but records aimed for the dance floor regardless of how rare or common. Soul Summit is not about a 'scene' or alienation. We encourage all people from walks of life to come listen and celebrate early soul music.

Cyrus D (Friends of Sound Records, Austin, Texas)
Returning to the Soul Summit for a rare second time, Cyrus D helped create the Bump and Hustle in 2010 in an effort to bring something new to an otherwise stagnant soul and funk dance scene. The Bump and Hustle quickly blew-up in Lawrence, KS and stayed relevant for almost 3 years. In 2012 Cyrus D teamed-up with DJ Makossa, together they started the Saint Louis chapter of the Bump and Hustle which has since then taken things to the next level. Cyrus D left the Midwest in February to manage the Friends of Sound in Austin, TX where he's lived the dream ever since. He combines his skills as a selector and hustler with skills as a mixer and storyteller to create the perfect beat that serves as a welcome contrast to the homogenized norm.
David Haffner (Friends of Sound Records, Austin, Texas)
When David Haffner plays records - people listen. His style, born from a Golden-era 90s Hip Hop perspective, refined in the deep funk 45 culture of the late 90s, and finally set in the subsequent years opening and operating one of the nation's premier all vinyl record shops - Friends of Sound in Austin, TX - champions the under-appreciated sounds in Soul. His sets always incorporate equal parts songs you know already, songs that you feel like you know, and songs you've never heard before.
He has run a number of successful parties in Austin, sharing the stage with esteemed guest DJs like Chairman Mao, David Griffiths, Mr Fine Wine, Shaun Pauling, Meaty Ogre, Dreas, Kevin Coombe. He has guest DJed parties ranging from Sweater Funk in San Franciso, The Get Back in Las Vegas, Funky Sole in Los Angeles, and Dam Funk's Funkmosphere party. He is recently back from playing in Germany alongside soul heavyweights Dave Thorley, Soul Sam, Marc Forrest, Lars Bulnheim, and George Mahood.
In the past, he has held down radio mix shows in Nashville and Los Angeles with residencies in Los Angeles and New York sharing the stage alongside the likes PB Wolf, Shortkut, Miles Tackett, Egon, Mike Vague, Galt MacDermot, Weldon Irvine, Mr. Dibbs, Madlib, DJ Signify,
and many more.
