Jane Lee Hooker, The Piggies, Clinical Trials

Jane Lee Hooker

"Jane Lee Hooker is a band of five women from New York City who take traditional blues on a fast and rough ride.

The band's calling cards are songs by Muddy Waters, Ray Charles, Howlin' Wolf, Johnny Winter and, of course, John Lee Hooker - all fed through double lead guitars, a heavy rhythm section, and soul-scouring vocals.

These women are by no means new to the game. Between the five band members, they have decades of experience playing, recording and touring both nationally and internationally. Individually, the members of Jane Lee Hooker have played for thousands of fans while sharing bills with the likes of Motorhead, MC5, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Deep Purple, among others. And they've played more club gigs in more cities than even they can believe.

So how'd this gang of pros finally find each other?

Guitarists Tracy and Tina honed their mutual love of blazing dual leads during their time together in Helldorado in the 90s. From there, Tracy joined Nashville Pussy, Tina joined Bad Wizard, and both women toured the world. But when their time with those bands ended, they realized they really missed the rush of trading guitar solos with each other and leaving audiences howling with joy and disbelief.

But first they needed a band.

They quickly recruited Mary, who played bass with Tracy in the early 90s punk band the Wives. Melissa sat behind the drum kit and got the nod before she even finished slamming out the first song of her audition. And no singer in the entire city can bring a crowd to its knees harder or faster than Dana Danger Athens.

The band is a loud, blistering blues monster capable of whispering in your ear before stomping on your heart.

Are you ready? It's time to get a load of Jane Lee Hooker."

The Piggies

The Piggies are a local group of some renown, featuring Andy Maltz of Lil' Killers sort-of-fame and Matt Fiveash (who's also been DJ'ing r'n'b 45 gigs around town). This group definitely has a bit of classic Stones mid-tempo swagger about them. They SOUND classic, let's put it that way.

About Clinical Trials' new EP...

Clinical Trials' latest effort, "Bleed Me" is a dark detour into the fringe regions of rock music. Challenging and balls-out, these new creations have been birthed bloody and wailing, fueled by punk, tinged with sexuality, yet still dangerously charming. From the first explosion of brass coupled with pummeling tom-heavy beats on "Whip It," to the deceptively poppy "American Girl," where dark synth textures bear counterweight to a danceable soca beat, "Bleed Me" is the most menacing type of thrill ride.

Bass-heavy, slow-driving verses give way to a wall of grunge guitars ("Sweet Machine"); hauntingly simple, nursery rhyme-like melodies dissipate into echoes of static and dying feedback ("White Fence"); nihilstic punk shouts soar over surf rock drums ("Animal"). The album oozes an intoxicating dysphoria. It breeds in a world of angst. It might leave you with a sense of nostalgic depression, or a reckless desire for self-destruction - perhaps even a chaotic urge to go out and smash little bunnies.

The EP was produced and mixed by the founding member of Clinical Trials, Somer Bingham, who also performs a wide range of duties in the live setting; playing bass & guitar simultaneously, triggering samples, and, of course, alternating between a disaffected sultriness and desperate, screaming vocals. She is now joined by bandmate Caryn Havlik, whose unstoppable energy & forcefulness in the kit-crushing department are a winning match for Bingham's live intensity.
