Anna Von Hausswolff
The singer / pianist Anna von Hausswolff hails from Sweden, the land of midnight sun, black metal and Ingmar Bergman. Her album Ceremony is primarily inspired by the death of her grandfather three years ago, and is informed by Anna’s childhood, when she and her sister sang in choirs and spent so much time around their father, the renowned avant-garde artist and composer Carl Michael von Hausswolff, as he worked with artists ranging from William S. Burroughs to Union Carbide Productions. To record this tribute to her grandfather, Anna, a unique and powerful singer, accompanies herself on that most sacred of instruments, the church organ. The result is a striking and deeply felt work that combines intimacy and majestic grandeur. Other Music Recording Co. (distributed by Fat Possum) released Ceremony in North America on July 9, following a U.K. / E.U. release by City Slang on June 17.
Noveller is the solo project of Brooklyn-based guitarist and filmmaker Sarah Lipstate. Handling the electric guitar as her muse, Lipstate summons a sonic palette so rich as to challenge the listener to conceive of how it's housed in a single instrument manipulated by a solitary performer.
She released her first two full-length albums on Brooklyn noise label No Fun Productions in 2009. Noveller's latest full-length, 'Desert Fires', came out via Lipstate's own imprint, Saffron Recordings, in July of 2010. Saffron Recordings also released a split LP between Noveller and unFact (David Wm. Sims of the Jesus Lizard) last year. Lipstate is currently working on the follow-up to 'Desert Fires' to be released by Weird Forest in 2011.
Recently, Lipstate performed at the Suoni Per Il Popolo fest in Montreal, Decibel Festival in Seattle, and Unsound Festival in Krakow. Noveller has toured the U.S. and internationally, at times supporting acts such as Xiu Xiu, the Jesus Lizard, Man Forever, Aidan Baker, and Emeralds.
She has previously performed as a member of Cold Cave, Parts & Labor, and One Umbrella. Lipstate has also participated in Rhys Chatham's Guitar Army, and Glenn Branca's 100 guitar ensemble.
Her short films screened at the SXSW film festival in 2006 and 2007, and earned Lipstate the "Diamond in the Rough Cut" award for exceptional emerging filmmaker at Cinematexas 2006. She debuted a new film, 'Interior Variations', at the New Museum as part of No Fun: Infinite Sound and Image in May 2009. The film also screened at the 12th Kyoto International Film & Video Festival in Japan, and as part of the 'New York Avant Cinema Series' at the 23rd Singapore International Film Festival. Lipstate's film works were showcased in the Women of NY Cinema screening as part of the 2009 NY Eye + Ear Festival in Tribeca.
Lipstate received a BS in Radio-Television-Film at the University of Texas at Austin in December 2006, and currently resides in the Greenpoint neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY.
Bad Braids is the solo project of Philadelphia based multi-instrumentalist, Megan Biscieglia. Cyclical, intricate guitar work serves as a landscape for her voice to float upon. Her sonic-dreamscapes rely heavily on hypnotic psychedelic elements, but are rooted in her own brand of dream-folk grittiness.
