“A rock band with a country problem.”
If Dave Edmunds fronted The Tennessee Three and they rented a studio next door to The Who, it might sound something like the twangy rock ‘n’ roll cooked up by San Francisco trio The GoldDiggers - straddling the line between Americana and British-tinged rock by way of tightly crafted, rootsy pop songs. As featured performers in the lounge at the historic Fillmore Auditorium, The GoldDiggers have opened shows for a wide range of artists including Chris Isaak, Robert Earl Keen, Drive-By Truckers and Tesla.
Their debut on world-renowned KPIG Radio and energetic live shows quickly established The GoldDiggers as “one of the more rockin’ alt-country bands to break through in 2008” (HicksWithSticks.com) but it wasn’t until
they realigned as a trio at the end of 2010 that the band found its true voice with a stripped-down but sonically rich format, highlighting their heightened sense of dynamics and rhythmic interplay and veering effortlessly from locked-in country groove to all-out gallop and back again for a swinging reprise - all in one song!
The past two years were jam-packed with tours to Austin, TX, the band’s first appearance at the colossal SXSW Music Festival, a NorCal mini-tour supporting (Grammy nominee and current Jefferson Starship vocalist) Cathy Richardson’s all-star “Macrodots” band, opening slots at notable Bay Area venues (Slim’s, Sweetwater Music Hall, Café Du Nord, Red Devil Lounge, Elbo Room) for national touring acts Deke Dickerson and Hellbound Glory, performances at SF’s annual Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan “tribute shows,” radio airplay from legendary college station KALX all the way to The Netherlands, and a free outdoor concert at the famed “Bandshell” in Golden Gate Park.
With their residency as the “Roots Jam House Band” at Berkeley’s venerable Starry Plough Pub and a stint hosting “Western Wednesdays” at the Historic 23 Club in Brisbane, CA, the trio has also proven themselves a versatile backing band, recently appearing with acts as varied as Austin-based pop/rock artist Brittany Shane, OutMusic Award winning country singer Kitty Rose, singer/songwriter Rich McCulley (multiple TV & film credits), and a growing list of performing songwriters in the San Francisco scene.
In March 2013 the ‘Diggers return to Austin for a series of ‘unofficial’ showcases at the 27th annual SXSW Music Festival.
You can call it Roots Rock or Alt-Country or even “California twang-rock” but if you’re a fan of The GoldDiggers you can count yourself in good company with the likes of storied twangmaster Bill Kirchen. And leave it to legendary singer/songwriter Marshall Crenshaw to put it most succinctly: “I like the band.”
