Converse Rubber Tracks Live featuring Best Coast

With all of the disturbing change California is facing these days, be it financial, social, or political, it would seem a stretch to call it anything but doomed. Heck, even the weather seems to have left the once seemingly endless sunny shores. Fortunately, there is still hope to be found. A hope that has risen before when all seemed dire, and that hope is in the music from the Best Coast. An appropriate name for a musical project that hearkens the days of surfer rock from it's majestic heyday of the 1960s.

It is easy enough to imagine Bethany Cosentino in a brightly colored go-go dress, thigh high boots and possibly a beehive hairdo, as she swoons to the swaying rhythm of her and fellow bandmate Bobb Bruno's songs. And though the imagery might not be factual, the music certainly is. Inspired by such acts as the Ronettes, Connie Francis, and Patsy Cline, with a heavy dose of reverb and a dash of lo-fi, Best Coast is currently doing quite well from sea to shining sea.

Their first full length album, Crazy for You, released in July of 2010, has had a very positive critical and popular reception, even cracking the Billboard Top 40 in August of the same year. They have been featured on Jimmy Fallon, named as one of the best albums of the year by Spin Magazine, and generally reached mass popularity at a rate most bands can only dream of. From this point on it is anyone's guess as to what the future holds, but it surely is refreshing to hear such uplifting music coming from the West Coast. If Ms. Cosentino continues to write such happy and dreamy melodies, perhaps the West Coast can continue to vie for the title of Best Coast.

CHAD MITCHELL

Blouse is based out of a 6,000 square-foot warehouse in North Portland. The project started in the summer of 2010, after Los Angeles native Charlie Hilton met Patrick Adams in art school. They made a few home recordings and soon began spending nights at the warehouse recording with Jacob Portrait (Producer of Mint Chicks, Dandy Warhols, Starfucker). Having played music since their teens, the three found that there was something inexplicable in their coming together. After posting two demo tracks to Bandcamp's website, the group was picked up by Captured Tracks out of Brooklyn, NY. A 7" single of Into Black was released at the end of March '11 by Captured Tracks. Sub Pop Records will be releasing the second single for Shadow on May 31st.

Warm Soda

One of our very favorites bands of the last five years, Oakland's Bare Wires, broke up this year after a tumultuous SXSW and a subsequently cancelled US tour, as reported by SF Weekly . Though Bare Wires still have one more album en route for release later this summer dubbed Idle Dreams—a follow up to last year's sublime 10", Cheap Perfume —frontman and all-around glam-fueled power-pop mastermind Matthew Melton has already focused his talents and energy towards two exciting new projects: his own East Oakland-based studio and label, Fuzz City , and a new band, Warm Soda—both of which are well under way. Fuzz City—which Melton runs along with Rob Good, Ian McBreyer and Chase Oren—has three 7"s under its belt by Bay area talents Adam Widener, Burnt Ones, and Dirty Cupcakes. Warm Soda isn't far behind either with its own forthcoming single due out shortly via Southpaw. The first gulp of Warm Soda's rock 'n' roll formula is the syrupy, garage-cooked pop of "Reaction." Bare Wires may be over, but "Reaction" retains much of the band's signature moves: muted guitars, snappy solos, glam-smacked drumming, and Melton's sweet gravely hush of a vocal delivery. Bare Wires or not, if Melton continues to produce music this consistently compelling, this fan's appetite will be more than sated.
