English afro-folk-pop ensemble The Melodic will release their debut album Effra Parade this November 5th via Anti-. It is the follow up to the band's acclaimed EP On My Way. English newspaper The Observer described The Melodic as "Incredibly beautiful, with harmonies and rich instrumentation that make you want to dance and cry at the same time," while in the US the band has drawn comparisons to indie darlings Beirut and The Decemberists.
The Melodic are a quietly radical band. This is the first young English group to lionize Chilean neo-folk rebel Victor Jara since Sandinista-era Clash. Their new album Effra Parade was self-recorded in a sound-proofed bedroom in South London over several years with a baroque line-up of 18 instruments. All the more impressive when you consider they are still in their early twenties.
Three years ago, Vikesh Kapoor performed at Howard Zinn's memorial service in Boston, in front of Zinn's family and colleagues (including Noam Chomsky). Inspired by Zinn's lifelong battle against class/race injustice, Kapoor spent the next two years in Portland working on a concept record based on a related newspaper article. His debut album, The Ballad Of Willy Robbins, out this Fall, chronicles the brutal but hopeful story of a working class man who slowly loses everything: ambitions, health, family, shelter. The album was co-produced by Adam Selzer (M. Ward) and features stellar participation from Nate Query (Decemberists, Black Prairie), Jeff Ratner (Langhorne Slim) and Birger Olsen (Denver).
Bird Courage met in dark spaces under New York City and together are now forging a new pastoral-astral sound that comes from the heart, the land, and the stars.
It was in a dark, smoke-filled basement in Brooklyn that Erik, Sam, and I met through our songs. Whatever it is that we wanted to give people through music, we heard instantly and recognized in one another's voices, and since our first group hug we've been focusing all of our energies into the songs that we want to sing to real people -- to look one another in the eye, and to exchange glances into one another's hearts.
