Sometimes the most rewarding discoveries are the ones that take you completely by surprise. Foxes is one of those discoveries. Arriving unheralded with her Neon Gold Records debut 'Youth' late last year, it wasn't long before the song's resplendent synths, industrial percussion and by-turns-searing-and-soaring vocal were the talk of the town.
Foxes is in actual fact just one -- Louisa Rose Allen. The Southampton-born 22 year-old followed her big sister to London the day she turned 18. She tried her hand at studying music but dropped out when she realised it wasn't the studying part that she enjoyed. With 'Youth' (and its mournful b-side 'Home,' and resulting remixes) having so far garnered over two million combined Soundcloud and YouTube plays, and 13,000 Hypemachine 'likes' between them, plus synchs on CW's "Gossip Girl," it's unlikely she'll be heading back to class anytime soon.
Now she returns with its eagerly awaited follow up, the "Warrior" EP, led by the dual-pronged attack of lead songs 'Warrior' and 'White Coats'. Foxes will release the "Warrior" EP on 4th July via Neon Gold Records on 7-inch vinyl and digital EP.
We Are Twin
Germany-raised Sri Lankan multi-instrumentalist and producer Nicholas Balachandran met New York-born and bred singer songwriter Gabi Christine during a 2009 songwriting session. After that first meeting, they had fifteen songs. That's really when WE ARE TWIN came to life and began making music.
"Our creative minds are identical," Gabi says. "It's the most natural thing in the world."
The group continued penning countless songs. Along the way, they landed upon a style that dips into rock 'n' roll soul, R&B production, Pop sensibility and even a little classical orchestration
Nicholas explains, "Although the instrumentation is very rock 'n' roll with synthesizers and guitars, we try to create moments that feel likeyou're listening to a symphony. At the same time, we won't record a song unless we can sit down with acoustic guitars and coerce a timeless feeling from it."
"I want the music to help listeners -- even if it transports them to some place like a movie does. It's an experience that's meant to be enjoyed," Gabi elaborates.
The same musical feel vibrantly colors their five-song debut EP, WE ARE TWIN, being released by A&M/Octone Records.
WE ARE TWIN's first single "The Way We Touch" builds from a driving beat into an unshakable chorus. Gabi delivers each word with bluesy cadence echoing voices like Amy Winehouse and Grace Potter with infectious passion matched by a warm soundscape bristling with synths, keys, and strings.
Their connection proves infectious at every turn. Introducing WE ARETWIN...
LA duo MYPET aka. Amy and Ray, have had an impressive response to debut first single "Pays To Know". A catchy as shit track, filled with a generous helping of belly-vibrating synths and sultry vocals. It's a pretty sexy affair all round.
Driven by a rhythm beaten out on (or at least sampled from) a hi-hat that sounds like it’s coming close to the end of its life, with a winding bassline and occasional interjections from beefy but understated synths, Amy’s vocals are draped over the top. “I’ve got you were I want you”, she insists. And as where I am is sitting here playing the one song of hers that I can find to listen to, I guess she probably has.
