Maribou State (DJ Set)

Since then they have steadily built a glowing international reputation via a string of well-loved EPs and a fistful of remixes (including Kelis, Lana del Ray, Ultraísta) since 2011. Plaudits from the electronic press have flowed thick and fast alongside support from radio heavyweights: Zane Lowe, Huw Stephens, Annie Mac, B. Traits, Pete Tong and Gilles Peterson amongst others.

The past 18 months has been a glorious blur, with weekends dedicated to touring – the duo have zipped around UK, Europe, the US and Australia – whilst keeping a strict 9-to-5 work ethic in the studio during the week that has enabled them to record their finest work to date. It’s hard to pick out highlights, but Glastonbury, Warehouse Project, and Bestival were particularly special milestones.

Intrigues by the dynamics of electronic music for the dance floor as much as the richness and human quality of live instrumentation and song craft, they have worked tirelessly to evolve and forge a unique, compelling and deeply soulful marriage of the organic and the synthetic, showcased on their forthcoming debut.

JDH & Dave P (FIXED)

Rumors of NYC nightlife’s demise have been greatly exaggerated. While the ever-pervasive rumors of “no dancing allowed” and draconian cabaret laws continue to reverberate around the world’s cities, the state of underground dance music in the big apple is indeed much stronger. This is thanks, in no small part, to the efforts of Dave Pianka and Josh Houtkin (DJing as Dave P and JDH, respectively). The two have been responsible for bringing over some of the most credible DJs and live bands and giving them a proper venue and environment in which to play. In addition, they have honed their DJ and production skills over the years, and are increasingly breaking new records and sounds with their back-to-back sets. Dave has also recently kicked into gear with production duties, contributing remixes of established acts like the Klaxons and Bloc Party.

Heathered Pearls (DJ Set)

The ambient project Heathered Pearls was the brainchild of Polish-born Brooklynite Jakub Alexander, who had a career deeply rooted in music before he ever released any of his own. He was music “curator” for Tycho’s ISO50 blog, Tycho’s manager, a DJ under the Aarnio moniker, and, latterly, head of A&R at Ghostly International, the label that released his music. Introduced as a young man to ambient music by his mother, he loved the sound but hated the “Pure Moods” clichs often associated with it, and strove to create his own vision of the genre that avoided these. In 2004, while residing in Ann Arbor, Michigan, he founded the eclectic electronica netlabel Moodgadget alongside his friend Adam E. Hunt, with the aim

of “exposing the diversity in electronically made music.” Many of the label’s alumni later went on to release albums on Ghostly.

After years of daily DJ mix podcasts on ISO50 as Aarnio, in 2011 his own music was released for the first time, as a now-hard-to-find EP compilation, Polite Isle, was issued under his real name through the digital subscription-only Ghostly Music Service; then, in December 2012, the Ghostly label proper put out his debut album as Heathered Pearls, Loyal. Created to help him deal with his own anxiety and heavily inspired by his favorite experience sitting by the ocean at night the hypnotic, soothing, melodic, loop-based ambient record dropped on vinyl and digital only. ~ John D.
