Mike Bell and the Movies

Mike Bell and the Movies

Mike Bell & (and) the Movies is a power pop band from Philadelphia Pennsylvania. We sometimes get compared to other bands but make no mistake we are the real deal. Our band plays concerts in all different venues and we even tour across the country. We are all nice musicians and work hard to give you the music that you love. each of us is different so find out about each of us in the pages below.

Penrose

Penrose is Thomas Murphy, Patrick Murphy, and Daniel Murphy, three brothers from Philadelphia. The origins of the band date back to their grade school days taking piano lessons together, but in the Spring of 2009 they played their first show together in a warehouse in North Philadelphia. Since then the brothers have worked to create an original, hard hitting sound that combines the hard rock of Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath with the delta blues of John Lee Hooker and R.L. Burnside with the innovation of Radiohead and Pink Floyd flowing throughout.

The band has made its home in Philadelphia and New York venues such as The Trocadero Main Stage, The Mercury Lounge, The North Star Bar, The Khyber, and Arlene's Grocery.

Recently, the band experienced such successes as being given the opportunity to open for international megaband MGMT in front of a 3,000+ audience, and being offered a residency at the world famous Arlene's Grocery in Manhattan for the month of August, and were awarded Deli Magazine Band of the Month July 2010!

With Tom on drums, Pat on bass, and Dan on guitar/keys/vocals, the band creates a sound almost too large for a simple three piece. As one reviewer describes the live show, "Dan's bluesy slide playing during the verse contrasts sharply with Pat's fuzz-laden bass . . . providing the prerequisite wall of rhythm that would drive the Penrose sound. With the rhythmic vehicle mobilized, the sound was poised to wail."
