The Rosenthals with Naomi Sommers
The Rosenthals are a unique father-and-son collaboration between Phil and Daniel Rosenthal. Their music weaves together elements of bluegrass, folk and jazz with the unusual instrumentation of banjo, trumpet and vocals. Joining the duo for this special concert will be Phil’s daughter, Naomi Sommers, a singer-songwriter currently living in Germany. The trio will be performing original music by all three musicians, as well as new arrangements of traditional American folk tunes.
Phil Rosenthal served for many years as lead singer and guitarist in the acclaimed bluegrass band, The Seldom Scene. He’s been called “A roots music master” by Billboard magazine, and “One of the most expressive singers in traditional country music,” by the Washington Post. His original songs have been recorded by Johnny Cash, Bill Monroe and Nick Cave. Phil’s son, Daniel, is an accomplished trumpeter and composer. He has performed with jazz legends such as Steve Lacy and Bob Brookmeyer, and has toured throughout Europe, Africa and North America with Boston’s famed jazz and latin ensemble, the Either/Orchestra. He’s been called “A young trumpeter with a bright future,” by All About Jazz. Naomi Sommers is a talented singer-songwriter and guitarist. Her last solo release, Gentle As the Sun, gained much popularity in the UK and spent time at the top of the Americana radio charts in Europe as well.
The Rosenthals recent release, Fly Away (2013), has garnered praise from both music fans and critics alike. The Hartford Courant had this to say: “They’re the real deal. With their unique vibrancy and freshness, they don’t sound old-timey, but just plain timeless.” Vintage Guitar Magazine called it, “An unexpected gem.” The New Haven Register said, “If you’re the Rosenthals, it’s all in the family. And it works, beautifully.”
