Amidst a world of calculating contest winners, manufactured show ponies and cheap knock offs – Lorde is a true original.
She is Ella Yelich-O’Connor, born and raised on Auckland’s North Shore, and possessed of a singular ability to capture the majesty, and mundanity, of teenage life – in striking melodic snapshots that belie her age and experience.
Raised on a nutritious musical diet of Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac, The Smiths and Nick Drake, alongside a smattering of soul food from the likes of Etta James and Otis Redding, Ella was definitely set off on strong melodic footing. Later she discovered artists like James Blake, Bon Iver, Burial, Animal Collective, SBTRKT and Drake – all of whom made an impact in their own, individual way. As vital and varied as those influences are, they don’t really begin to tell the full story of Lorde’s music, which melds concentrated, sharp-eyed lyrics and multi-layered vocals with crisp, 2013 beatscapes.
The decision to release her first EP, with plenty of mystery but no marketing or publicity, and just a simple, lifelike illustration, was Lorde’s, and it was a masterstroke. Even after 60,000 free downloads on SoundCloud, The Love Club EP still shot to #1 on the New Zealand Album Chart, with Royals simultaneously occupying the top spot in the singles chart – without so much as a video on YouTube. Before any of that success, she was already the focus of a hotly contested bidding war, rapidly being signed up for the UK, US and other major territories, simply on the strength of her music and blindingly obvious potential alone. Tweeted about by everyone from Grimes to Sky Ferreira to Doomtree, and picked up by Buzzfeed, Perez Hilton et al – these are the beginnings of an impending roar, about an artist who is quite simply, cut from a different cloth.
With 11 Grammy nominations, seven platinum albums and Top 5 rankings on MTV's 10 Greatest MCs and The Source’s Top 50 Lyricists of All Time, Nas is one of the top rappers in music history. His debut album, “Illmatic”, released in 1994, received universal acclaim from both critics and the hip-hop community. The 20th anniversary reissue of the album, which features a bonus disc containing rare remixes, demos and freestyles, has already climbed back to #1 on the charts. Nas has six number 1 albums on the Billboard 200, tying him with Eminem and Kanye West for second all-time among rappers.
In less than two years, Walker has become one of electronic dance music’s most exciting new talents. He is part of the new breed of musicians learning how to write and produce his own material that is a welcomed compliment to the ever-changing world of dance music. Walker’s eclectic mix of arena style house music and affinity for melody, together with a good ear for what works on the dance floor, deliver a true musical artistry.
Morrison is the archetype of the modern DJ/producer. He is signed to Sony Records and Universal Music Group and has produced and/or remixed for legendary bands and acts such as Queen, Seal, the Pet Shop Boys, New Order, Cher, Moby and Imagine Dragons. The latest single from the multi-talented Morrison, ‘Goodbye’ has been certified platinum and was #1 on the Billboard Charts for 12 weeks in a row, as well as peaking at #2 on the iTunes dance chart.
Acclaimed San Diego rock band Switchfoot has seen multi-platinum success over its 17-year career, with 5.5 million albums sold, a GRAMMY, multiple world tours and no sign of slowing down. After releasing their first feature film, Fading West, in December and a brand new album of the same name that debuted at #6 on the Billboard Top 200, Switchfoot continues to build a global fan base devoted to their emotionally intelligent and uplifting brand of rock.
Eli Young Band
Eli Young Band has charted eight times on the Billboard country charts with three of their singles reaching number one: “Crazy Girl” (2011), “Even If It Breaks Your Heart” (2012) and “Drunk Last Night” (2013). The band has been nominated for more than twenty awards, winning Song of the Year and Breakthrough Artist in 2011. The band’s fifth studio album 10,000 Towns was released earlier this month.
Sundy Best blends country, bluegrass and rhythm and blues. The band’s video “Home” was a fixture in the Top 5 on Country Music Television (CMT) last year. The duo recently played at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville for the first time and their album Bring Up The Sun debuted at #11 on Billboard Magazine Top Country Album chart earlier this month.
Go Go Gadjet
Go Go Gadjet, one of the East Coast’s most popular cover bands, will open the Jägermeister stage. The band has performed in 11 states since 2005.
