Queen Plz is a scientist, a feminist, a dirty south enthusiast. Her art is inseparable from her politics, and her DJ sets will take you on a meandering journey from the rapid fire of the New York ballroom scene to the slow southern drawl of UGK. She aims to move you, in one way or another, so close your eyes, drop your inhibitions, and follow the night where it leads you."
Queen Plz has been throwing parties in the triangle area for almost five years. She is one of the original founders and resident djs of the monthly Illegal parties at The Pinhook in Durham, as well as holding it down for the queer party scene on a regular basis. She has opened for Jubilee, Lief, Mykki Blanco, TT the Artist, and Mighty Mark.
Her mixtape "First Amendment Area" is a recent winner of the "Bull City in The Mix" local mixtape competition.
PlayPlay creatively interweaves nostalgic hip-hop and house classics into both her DJ sets and her music production, which are largely composed of city-specific sounds – namely Chicago juke and footwork, Baltimore club, NYC house, New Orleans bounce and Miami bass. An extremely versatile DJ, she also favors dancehall, cumbia, global bass, jungle/early hardcore/breakbeat, acid house, EBM, industrial and 90s nostalgia all around. Her ultimate goal is to be in constant musical conversation with the crowd, speaking across generation, race, ethnicity, gender identity and sexuality to create an all-inclusive dance floor.
PlayPlay has opened for Big Freedia, MC Lyte, TT the Artist, Mighty Mark, Le1f, Jubilee, MikeQ, Cakes Da Killa and others. She is an organizer and resident DJ of the Pinhook's largest dance party, Party Illegal. She is also the creator and energetic force behind several themed parties at the Pinhook, including a long-running 90's party, an industrial/goth night and a queer glam rock party. In short, PlayPlay's style is about as diverse as they come.
