Peter Phillips (born June 21, 1970 in Bronx, New York), better known by his stage name Pete Rock, is an American record producer, DJ and rapper. He rose to prominence in the early 1990s as one half of the critically acclaimed group Pete Rock & CL Smooth. After the duo went their separate ways, Rock continued with a solo career that has garnered him worldwide respect, though little in the way of mainstream success. Along with groups such as Stetsasonic, A Tribe Called Quest, The Roots and Gang Starr, Rock played a major role in the merging of elements from jazz into hip hop music (also known as jazz rap). He is widely recognized as one of the greatest hip hop producers of all time, and is often mentioned alongside DJ Premier and RZA as one of the mainstays of 1990s East Coast hip hop production. Pete Rock is also the older brother and younger cousin, respectively, of rappers Grap Luva and Heavy D.
Editors from About.com ranked him as #2 in their "Top 50 Hip-Hop Producers" list.
ZOOLAY is a rap duo with a golden era sound- buried beneath a refreshing taste of the new school.
This fiery duo originally started as a trio in late 2006, but the 3rd member was quickly left behind due to his poor work habits and unsatisfactory business game.
"If we are trying to make it in this music industry, then we need to take our business very serious as well, Otherwise we are just making music as a hobby" - Don Ron
ZOOLAY (Don Ron and iLLz-1 the MC) debuted in the L.A. underground scene with a song entitled "Zoology".
The song was from a mixtape entitled, "THE APE TAPE"(2008) - Hosted by: Tommy Blak of Project Blowed.
THE APE TAPE featured 27 tracks and was well received by underground heads throughout Los Angeles.
Some of the songs even managed to get airplay on various college radio stations despite the lack of funding or proper push behind the project.
Some of the party-people favorites include, "Party N Bullshit", "Blowing Gold" and "BackStabberz (Remix) . -Good Luck Finding this mixtape- for only 1000 copies were pressed*.
During their APE TAPE (mixtape) campaign Zoolay performed alongside acts as:
-- Slick Rick
In fact, there are too many groups or mc's to name, that Zoolay has open for.
Now, Fast Forwarding into 2009 and with the anticipation of their first LP relase (Blood, Sweat & Beers) Zoolay will definitely be turing heads abroad considering the LP with feature production from:
* THX (Snoop Dogg, David Banner, MURS)
*Domingo (Fat Joe, Eminem, Kool G.Rap)
*1500 or Nuttin (Lupe Fiasco, Jay-Z, The Game)
and * Dibiase, who is an up and coming producer with incredible beats
Upon hearing Blood, Sweat & Beers - you will soon notice their signature flows that can make any house party jump.
Zoolay takes a lot of pride into their lyrics and they are not big fans of taking a note-pad and scribbbling the first thing that comes to mind like other rappers.
Not only can their rhymes make the ladies feel good, the fellas act up, but they can also sprinkle you with knowledge for you to take home and later disect.
In a nutshell, They create songs that a wide range of listeners can feel, from the honeys in the club to the G's rolling on Crenshaw Ave. on Sunday Afternoon.
Of the two mc's, Don Ron has a more confrontational energetic flow whose lines touch various contreversial topics, including religion and politics.
iLLz has a more laid back- slick approach that reminds you of a hazy California day, yet rough and rugged at the same time.
This west coast duo has been making a little noise and will soon be blowing wigs back throughout with their LP Release Blood, Sweat & Beers - Oct.20th, 2009.
Moreover, this duo has vowed to preserve the hip hop culture they grew up on and love so dearly.
In recent months, Zoolay has been heavily at work putting together a monthly event called THE LIONS DEN in Santa Monica, CA.
In their quest of keeping hip hop alive, Zoolay has been instrumental in providing quality events for the people to enjoy.
Each month ZOOLAY and THE LIONS DEN staff bring you the best-of-the-best from hip hops past, present, and future.
Some of the acts that have blessed the stage in recent months have been:
Strong Arm Steady
Blu & Exile
and Dudley Perkins to name a few.
The List goes on and on.
