Walking Papers is a blues-rock band formed by Jeff Angell and Barrett Martin, two long-serving veterans of the Seattle music scene. Jeff previously sang and played guitar for the bands Post Stardom Depression and The Missionary Position, and Barrett, a drummer and multi-instrumentalist, played for grunge pioneers Skin Yard and Screaming Trees, as well as the super groups Mad Season and Tuatara.
The band played its first Seattle shows initially as a duo with Jeff on guitar and Barrett on drums, but soon added Duff McKagan on bass to make their official debut as a trio on July 22nd, 2012. Benjamin Anderson brought his keyboard talents from the studio to the live stage, evolving the band into a quartet. Pearl Jam and Mad Season guitarist Mike McCready has been known to make guest appearances on stage as the lead guitar player.
Walking Papers self-titled debut album features a stellar cast of musicians who have each added their own musical voices to the sound: Vocals and Guitar come from Jeff; Drums, Vibraphone and Backing Vocals from Barrett; Electric Bass from Duff McKagan; two blistering guitar solos from Mike McCready; elegant keyboards from Benjamin Anderson, and soulful horn arrangements from Dave Carter (Trumpet), Dan Spalding (Baritone Sax), and Ed Ulman (Trombone). The album was recorded by Catherine Ferrante at Avast Studios in Seattle, and mixed by Jack Endino at Soundhouse in Seattle. Album mastering was done by Chris Hanzsek at Hanzsek Audio.
Walking Papers show that a great song can be conveyed with thundering drums, rumbling bass, and a howling guitar just as easily as it can with percolating marimbas and shimmering vibraphone. The songs on this album can stand alone as individual stories, but taken together as a whole, they convey a much larger narrative with tales of wandering souls, the collisions of will, and the dark beauty of the American heart.
Beware Of Darkness
Beware of Darkness is a bold, new power-trio of old souls, pissed at life in a modern age. They are ready to frighten your children, sleep with your daughters, and make you shake, scream, and contort like it's a Depression-Era Southern exorcism. They play fast moving rock songs with exploding key and rhythms changes mid-song. They also play slow-cooked, sexed-up bluesy things. Imagine Bowie's "Hunky Dory" with low, detuned, primal Zeppelin-esqe guitar riffs.
Their live shows have the emotional climaxes of a church revival; a fitting description as chief songwriter and guitarist, Kyle Nicolaides has, on multiple occasions, brought a gospel church of 200+ to their feet in standing ovation.
The rhythm section consists of Tony Cupito (drums) and Daniel Curcio (bass), who share a mutual respect and admiration for Blues, Gospel, and Motown music. They all met in LA, where Nicolaides moved to escape the Santa Barbara doldrums, and Curcio (a New Jersey native) was visiting after discovering he had a long lost half brother. The three came together to form Beware of Darkness, taking the name from a George Harrison song, and signed to Bright Antenna in late 2011.
Lyrically, Nicolaides cites literary influences, Sylvia Plath, Emily Dickenson, and David Foster Wallace. He delivers scathing lyrical content in a snarling howl tackling subject matters of depression, chaste women, pedophilic priests, and post-modern paranoia. Incredibly potent and precise, these are lyrics meant to evoke reactions.
They are here to divide, conquer and seduce, and are moving awfully quick. Beware of Darkness is here. Catch them if you can.
The Burning of Rome
"The perfect mix of goth and dance influences to accompany an Edwardian Ball, with enough organs and dark vocals to satisfy Castlevania fans."
- San Diego City Beat Magazine
"Their musical horizons stretch far beyond the threshold of modern rock. The Burning of Rome is a post-apocolypitic mash-up of meticulous orchestration, electronic manipulation and eccentric experimentation. If Danzig constructed a carnival ride, it'd look something like this."
- 944 Magazine
"Gypsy punk, rife with keys, rasping vocals and animated onstage antics."
- Paste Magazine
"What gothic music has come to in the new millennium. Recommend it for indie fans in general, especially those who appreciate keyboards and melody."
- Skratch Magazine
"A thrillingly eerie avant-garde seven-piece out of San Diego"
- Performer Magazine
"Music for the circus of the underworld - done in all the right ways."
- San Diego City Beat Magazine
"All sorts of arty noises that somehow turn into amazingly melodic music - imagine every genre of music smooshed together and sprinkled with a sense of humor."
- San Diego Union Tribune
"The kind of songs that Danny Elfman would assemble as a soundtrack for the Technicolor birth of the spawn of Satan"
- San Diego City Beat Magazine
"The Burning of Rome's style can not be forced into any known genre without taking shortcuts and over looking its originality. Its dark tones and circus like melodies intermingle into one spontaneous, yet entertaining work of musicianship."
