Water Liars is Andrew Bryant and Justin Kinkel-Schuster. They met on tour some time ago and have been friends ever since. Named after the first story in Barry Hannah’s collection Airships, Water Liars began by accident in Pittsboro, MS in late 2011. Justin, who previously spent some time in a St. Louis-based band named Theodore, writes the songs and Andrew makes them better.
The new Water Liars record Wyoming was made in Water Valley, MS in September 2012. Weighted with accumulated evidence from experience, it’s likely to stab anyone who may hear it in the gut and the heart. And then they’ll turn the record over again.
Their first album Phantom Limb was the product of the aforementioned accident; a collection of songs, recorded without aim over one weekend at Bryant’s house in Pittsboro, released by Misra Records in March 2012.
hannah, delia and amanda grew up in st. louis in a house that had the stereo on always, tuned to community radio and bob dylan records. hannah has played classical guitar for over 10 years, and delia has been writing poetry since she got her hands on a diary. They wrote their first dubb nubb song at the age of 15 and have since put out two EPs, a 7" record and a full length album. today the three raineys live in columbia and when they aren't studying or teaching hebrew school, they play shows in bedrooms, backyards, bars, ice cream shops, trailsides, and festival stages all over missouri and beyond.
Shawn James & the Shapeshifters
Born in 1986 in the south side of Chicago, Shawn James had a hardworking, kind mother and a gambling, abusive, drunk father. He grew up singing in church and was drawn to the emotional and ethereal power that music could have over people. It was there that he found his escape and learned how to harness his unique, soulful voice.
Shawn now lives in Fayetteville, Arkansas and plays a mix of haunting folk and hard-hitting soulful blues. You might catch him playing on the street in the rain some night, rockin at a bar while you get rowdy, or you might just find him performing an intimate set for friends at a house show. No matter where you see him, just make sure you have your eyes and ears open, his performance will be one you won’t forget.
2013 will be busy for Shawn.shawn james
The Wolf is the first in a set (The Shapeshifter Trilogy) of 3 concept EPs that Shawn James is releasing in 2013 under the name Shawn James & the Shapeshifters.
The Wolf is a haunting, folk story of a man who was raised by wolves. Shawn’s unique, powerful songwriting mixed with the beautiful, orchestral layers of the Shapeshifters makes for an unforgettable musical experience.
He plans to release The Bear in the springtime and says that it will have more of an old, rowdy, blues sound with swampy, slide guitar.
The Hawk is planned for the fall of this year and will be written on piano.
Shawn James is definitely one to watch in 2013.
