The Shotgun Wedding Quintet
An elite team of instrumental outlaws, The Jazz Mafia has taken many shapes since its inception, the most notable of which is certainly The Shotgun Wedding Quintet. Fresh off their nationwide tour with hip-hop stalwarts Zion I & The Grouch, and having backed many other music rebels in the studio and on the stage: Beck, Digital Underground, Lyrics Born, Carlos Santana, Mixmaster Mike, and Q-Bert, The Shotgun Wedding Quintet have recorded twelve new tales of San Francisco's underworld. "Tales From The Barbary Coast", the group's sophomore album, is a Bay Area themed record with red-light district saloon-seedy stories in sync with the vibe of the California Gold Rush days where San Francisco's Barbary Coast got its name, but executed with all the edge of right now. Forming in 2003, The Shotgun Wedding Quintet has worked to create an illicit blend of hip hop and jazz that's rooted in tradition, but is ever looking forward. Each member of the band is a multi-instrumentalist, making use of samplers and looping-techniques to create a wall of sound as band members shift from instrument to instrument building continuous layers of music and rhythm. As a result, this 4-piece ensemble creates the sound of a 10-piece group that is equal parts big-band and boom-bap, paying homage to the art of improvisation both lyrically and instrumentally.
Aima The Dreamer
For those in the know, Aima the Dreamer has been rockin' crowds for years as a vocalist and MC with groups such as J-Boogie's Dubtronic Science, The Mamaz, Goddess Alchemy Project and Jazz Mafia's Brass, Bows and Beats Hip-Hop Symphony. All of this in addition to her own solo project has given her a variety of outlets with which to harness her energy as not only a talented MC and vocalist, but also as a strong, feminine woman who easily holds her own amongst a male-dominated industry.
Spending her childhood moving across the United States from the Mid West of Detroit and Chicago towards the West Coast via Salt Lake City and Los Angeles, Aima finally found solid roots in Hawaii at the age of 9, where she lived for the next 10 years until planting herself firmly into the Bay Area, where she has resided ever since.
A troubled childhood led her to write poetry as a way of coping with the stresses of life. This skill would serve her well as she began going to open mics at the age of 16 as a spoken word artist and later finding her calling as an emcee in the Bay Area by way of meeting her other half of The Mamaz, Persia. "She really took me under her wing and transitioned me from spoken word to emcee".
Nearly 10 years later Aima has taken her lifetime of experiences and lessons learned and brought them together in a perfectly blended mix of music that reflects a woman who is independent, sexy, strong, spiritual and intelligent.
Coupled with her exquisite rhymes and flows, Aima the Dreamer's mixtape gives the music world a taste of an artist who knows what she wants. With plans for a full-length album in the works, there's no doubt she will get it.
Inspired by her family and friends, Aima cites the Bay Area as one of the biggest influences in her music; "I want to make music for all ages and especially for the young girls and women out there. I am inspired by all the great music that comes out of the Bay Area on a daily. It is truly a blessing to be surrounded by such open mindedness, revolutionary ideas, and beautifully talented people."
If you don’t know, you’d better ask somebody: DJ Platurn lives music. An 18 year veteran of the DJ game, his career has seen him rock parties worldwide including engagements throughout Asia, Australia, Europe, Canada, South America, Scandinavia, and countless venues in his home base of Northern California. He is a DJ adamant on sharing the world’s music with the music lovers within, a mission he’s proudly been succeeding at since he first threw down as a teenager.
The 80‘s and 90’s brought him to Hip-Hop, Hip-Hop brought him to the samples, the samples brought him to love and appreciation, and he brings all of these to the table when he steps behind the decks. His selection skills and ability to turn any venue into a “OOOOHHH SNAP!” fest have earned him a devoted following with those who share his passions for the art form of spinning and great music. He’s bringing it to the people because he knows they deserve it.
In 2013 DJ Platurn will leave no party unrocked. You’ll want to be there to see it.
Deejay Saurus is an Oakland based DJ, Producer and Engineer who has toured the world and worked with various Hip Hop acts and live bands, but can be found last Satudays in SF at Laszlo, where he hosts the Champion Sound party with fellow funkateer, Max Kane of 4ONEFUNK. If not exploring his passion for record digging and the archeology involved collecting vinyl, The Prehistoric B-Boy can be found teaching Youth Digital Sound Arts and Turntablism classes throughout the Bay area.
