Tera Melos is a three - piece band from Northern California consisting of Nick Reinhart (guitars, programming, vocals), Nathan Latona (bass) and newest member John Clardy (drums) Incorporating experimental rock, ambient electronics and unconventional song structure all in one to create their original brand of music characterized by their quickly alternating time signatures, start-stop dynamics, two-handed tapping, extended open-ended bridges, and the use of effect pedals and samplers. Tera Melos has 4 releases to date, including their most recent EP called Idioms Vol I, a 5 song covers album clocking in at under 9 minutes that the band has made a free download. Complex Full of Phantoms a full length split with By the End of Tonight released in 2007, on Temporary Residence. Drugs to the Dear Youth, a 5 Song EP all instrumental album released in 2007 on Sargent House. Their debut LP which is untitled was also re-issued in 2008 by Sargent House. Recently, Nick Reinhart (guitar, vocals) is also in a band with Zach Hill called Bygones, together they will be releasing their debut full length called by- on June 23, 2009 also on Sargent House.
Brooklyn's beloved guitar-anthem optimists Fang Island return with an album befitting its title: Major.
Like the painstakingly chiseled marble of the album artwork, Major is hefty, solid, monolithic and regal. Whereas Fang Island described their celebrated 2010 self-titled Sargent House debut as, "everyone high-fiving everyone," Major is evermore confident, triumphant and brimming with infectious enthusiasm. Its warm harmonies are given proper berth with more expansive dynamics and focused pop song craft.
"One of our core ideas has always been that our songs would be all of your favorite parts of the song that other bands make you wait 8 minutes to get to," explains guitarist/vocalist Jason Bartell. "We wanted to be the band that's nothing but your favorite hooks back to back." Major shows Fang Island deftly achieving that aim.
Zorch is a duo from Austin, TX. Composed of Zac Traeger (keyboards, omnichord, vocals) and Shmu (drums, omnichord, vocals), the two hail from Wisconsin and Canada respectively. The duo met in Boston and began recording dozens of improvisational mixtapes, which, after moving to Austin in 2009, would help lay the foundation for Zorch. Since that pivotal move, they've quickly made a home for themselves in the city's DIY scene, building a reputation on their intense and visual live shows and fan interaction.
Ports of Spain
From the back of the bar, Ports of Spain instantly scan as a full band, so it's a shock to discover their mathy shoegaze-pop is constructed by just two musicians. Ilya Gitelman uses octave pedals and loops to play lead, bass and rhythm guitar simultaneously, while Sam Carlson contributes vocals, keyboards and drums. Don't be fooled -- Ports of Spain are not another band that trades directionless loopy jazz odysseys for pure songcraft. Their equipment never gets in the way of their complex melodies. They write actual songs, consistently avoiding complication for the sake of complication. They juggle tons of ideas in every song, creating a noise that's consistently about to fall apart. That it doesn't is incredible by itself. Their brilliant songs may seem like a bonus under these circumstances, but don't underrate Ports of Spain. Even as these two guys spew chaos into crowded clubs, their songwriting is always there to remind you why a grounding in planned songcraft keeps so many of the best bands tethered to excellence. Ports of Spain belong in their company. Ports of Spain have played with bands like Tera Melos, Hospitality, Beach Fossils, Fang Island, Pissed Jeans, Pile, ONWE, Speedy Ortiz, Morning Teleportation, Kal Marks, and Solids.
