TEAMSUPREME Night with resident djs & special guests
FALCONS is an amalgamation of many things, a boiling pot of styles and genre-free influence. The musical tastes range from world music to southern rap, and everything in between. The only rules are to push the boundaries of conventional r&b, rap, and electronic music, exploring new directions, but never losing site of the dancefloor.
Mike Gao has been a part of the Los Angeles beat scene from early on, winning the first Project Blowed beat battle and performing at Low End Theory LA from one of its earliest nights. It was playing at Low End that he was discovered by Olan of All City Records for a split 10" with Tokimonsta. On the technology end, Mike Gao has developed an iPhone app to recognize beatboxing, an iPad app to play chords, many plug-ins and even hardware. His work has been featured on WIRED, music technology journal NIME, MTV Iggy and many more.
LA-based electronic musician, multimedia artist and mad scientist collector Steve Nalepa combines deep dub bass, glitchy breaks, bioacoustic atmospheres and beautiful sinewave melodies to create his patented brand of ambient glitch dub. Known for his vast and eclectic array of artistic collaborators — cultivated and acquired through years of producing spectacular audiovisual events and sharing bills with some of the worlds best electronic musicians — Nalepa is considered a key node in the west coast audiovisual scene and holds the appropriate title of Flavorpill's "beat guru".
Nalepa has performed at The Do Lab Stage at Coachella 2007, produced tracks with legends such as Bill Laswell and Pharoah Sanders, rocked it at Flavorpill's Friday's Off the 405 series at the Getty Museum, and shared a bill with Amon Tobin, Cut Chemist and DJ Spooky at Walt Disney Concert Hall. His Flatlands CD/DVD drops this year featuring groundbreaking videos by such luminaries as Benton-C Bainbridge, Brian Kane, Brian Ziffer and Biomorphica with remixes from a diverse, all-star lineup that includes The Glitch Mob, Ruxpin, Deru, (a)pendics.shuffle, David Last, RD, RaNDom, Slidecamp, Kero, Rena Jones, Kraddy, Aerostatic, Nosaj Thing and Bluetech.
Nalepa is also one of the 100 artists featured on the upcoming Visionaire Issue #53: SOUND, due out in November. The SOUND issue consists of five 12-inch vinyl records, picture discs imprinted with images that contain 100 minutes of sound content from artists including Lalo Schifrin, David Byrne, Michael Stipe, Bjork, Malcolm McLaren, Ryuchi Sakamoto, Johnny Marr, Courtney Love, Yoko Ono, Kanye West, Dolly Parton, Grace Jones, Gisele Bundchen, Helmut Lang, Towa Tei, Matmos, Mark Romanek, Adam Horowitz (Beastie Boys), Mark Mothersbaugh, Antony & the Johnsons, Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore, among others.
Dot is Kate Ellwanger, a 22-year-old composer and producer currently based in Los Angeles. She is a recent graduate of Chapman University's Conservatory of Music, which led her to the class of Dubspot beat guru Steve Nalepa, where she was introduced to electronic music production as well as the founders of TeamSupreme. Dot quickly discovered Low End Theory and the thriving Los Angeles beat community, which began to profoundly impact her production aesthetic. She debuted her live set at Low End Theory in 2011, and had continued to play in Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Seattle, Portland, and Singapore. She recently followed the release of her debut EP Calliope with a full-length album titled Evolve or Dissolve (out now on Alpha Pup Records). In addition to creating her own music, Dot also produces for other artists such as SZA (TDE), Teri GenderBender (Les Butcherettes, Bosnian Rainbows) and Kail (Hellfyre Club). Her sound is influenced by the music of Flying Lotus, Daedelus, Nosaj Thing, Frank Zappa, Brian Eno, The Silver Apples, and many more
