American Repertory Ballet brings the magic, beauty and fantasy of The Nutcracker to the stage with Tchaikovsky’s magnificent score, stunning new sets, thrilling choreography, and a cast of over 100 performers. This year, ARB is celebrating 50 consecutive years of its Nutcracker production! It is one of the longest-running Nutcracker production in New Jersey, and one of the longest-running in the United States.
ARB’s Nutcracker has been a holiday tradition since 1964, when the company, then known as Princeton Regional Ballet, under the direction of founder Audrée Estey, began to perform the ballet annually at McCarter Theatre in Princeton. In addition to at McCarter, the company has also performed Nutcracker for over 20 years at State Theatre in New Brunswick and Patriots Theater at the War Memorial in Trenton, and at many other venues throughout New Jersey and Pennsylvania over the years. This November and December, ARB’s Nutcracker will grace the stages at Union County Performing Arts Center in Rahway and Algonquin Arts Theatre in Manasquan, in addition to McCarter Theatre, State Theatre, and Patriots Theater at the War Memorial.
The current production (2010-present) is directed by Artistic Director Douglas Martin. It features the original Party and Dream Battle Scenes from Audrée Estey's production, with Snow Scene and Land of Sweets choreography by Douglas Martin. ARB’s professional dancers are joined by students from Princeton Ballet School to tell the story of a young girl and how a mysterious gift brings about enchanted dreams and fantastical scenes. This year, the production will feature a brand new magical growing Christmas tree. Whether it’s your first time, an annual tradition, or a once-in-a-lifetime experience, ARB's Nutcracker is a perfect holiday treat for your entire family to be transported and inspired.
