Dig Deeper is honored to present one of the Motor City's great vocalists, songwriters, producers, and drummers, Detroit Soul Ambassador Melvin Davis – in a rare NYC performance backed by the Brooklyn Rhythm Band.

Melvin Davis's influence and involvement in the Detroit soul scene in the 60s and 70s is so profound and extensive that it is impossible to write an abbreviated biography.

As a drummer, he did substantial session work for Motown, backed Smokey Robinson on "Tears of a clown" and on tour, and partnered with Dennis Coffey on his early solo work. As a songwriter, he penned "Chains of love" for JJ Barnes, "Stop! Don't worry about it" for Lonnette McKee, "I need my baby" for Jackey Beavers, and countless others.

As an artist, Melvin recorded a wealth of material himself in the 1960s whose only misfortune was being released on obscure labels like Ke Ke, Wheel City, Jack Pot, Fortune, and Groovesville that lacked the marketing budgets to have the songs heard much beyond the studios they were recorded in. "Find a quiet place (and be lonely)", "Wedding bells", "I won't be your fool", "I won't come crawling back to you" should all be standards on the radio – but that's where Dig Deeper comes in.

Anyone lucky enough to catch Melvin's all-to-brief NYC sets in years past at Lincoln Center and at Norton Records' 25th anniversary show knows the greatness to expect. Melvin's set at Dig Deeper will feature a broad spectrum of his own material as well as songs he penned for others – including a few he has never had a chance to perform live since they were first recorded in the studio in the 60s.

Before and after the live sets, Dig Deeper residents DJ Honky and Mr. Robinson will spin all original soul and funk 45s for the dancefloor. The Brooklyn Rhythm Band will be opening the show with their own set of soul classics!
