The St. Peter Street All-Stars
The St. Peter Street All-Stars featuring Lars Edegran
Piano, guitar, and banjo player Lars Edegran was born in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1944. His father played guitar, banjo, and violin, and his brother also played piano. Lars studied for two years at the Juilliard School in New York and worked at a record company in Chicago, where he would go to blues clubs to hear musicians like Buddy Guy. In 1965, Lars moved to New Orleans, and on his first day in town, he went to Preservation Hall. Lars quickly became a regular at the Hall and began joining the musicians at house parties in the Treme. Trumpet player Johnny Wiggs took Lars under his wing and got Lars work painting houses – including George Lewis’s house. Lars has been greatly inspired and influenced by all the musicians at Preservation Hall and Dixieland Hall, especially banjoist Father Al Lewis and Pianist Tuts Washington. Lars has recorded with numerous jazz greats, including Doc Cheatham, Sammy Price, Al Grey, Arvell Shaw, Danny Barker, Jabbo Smith, Al Casey, and Franz Jackson, as well as k.d. lang. Lars has toured all over the world playing music, including performance for the Queen of England with the cast of One Mo’ Time, whose soundtrack was nominated for a Grammy Award, and at the Newport Jazz Festival, where he met Louis Armstrong and Mahalia Jackson. Lars’s Soundtrack for the movie Pretty Baby was nominated for an Academy Award. In 2010, Lars received an award from the Preservation Resource center for outstanding musical contribution to the New Orleans community and jazz heritage. Lars has played at Preservation Hall off and on for the last forty years.
Leader bios were pulled from interviews conducted and published by Eve Abrams in the book 'Preservation Hall.'
