The Preservation Hall Swing Kings
The Preservation Hall Swing Kings featuring John Royen
John Royen was born in Washington D.C. in 1955, where he grew up listening to his parents’ jazz records. His father thought Sidney Bechet was the greatest, but it was Fats Waller who fed John’s soul. He started playing music late in life, teaching himself ratime piano when he was eighteen, and then taking lessons from John Eaton, John moved to New Orleans to finish college at Loyola University, but what he really sought was the city’s connection to the old jazz music he loved. In fact, John spent so much time going out to hear music that he nearly flunked out of his first semester. “The amazing thing is that in New Orleans, the music is an integral part of the culture,” says John. “it’s not something that is presented in a club from a band. It’s a functional part of society. And that was a real revelation to me.” John treasures the time he spent with the Humphrey brothers, Kid Thomas Valentine, Worthia “Showboy” Thomas, Kid Sheik, Ernie Cagnolatti, Narvin Kimball, and countless others who accepted him and performed with him. John’s piano playing has also been influenced by Willie “The Lion” Smith and Jelly Roll Morton. Among many others, John has performed with Pete fountain, Al Hirt, Jeff Healey, and Jack Maheu. John first started playing at Preservation Hall in 1979
