Shaina has a playful blend of Billy Joel's piano-driven pop, Aretha's soul and Regina Spektor's whimsy.' - NPR/WNYC
'Shaina has the coolest, soulful, smoky sound and I assumed she was a chanteuse that's been playing in all the coolest clubs in town for years.' - Seth Rudetsky, playbill.com
Raised in the green mountains of Vermont, Shaina Taub is a New York-based performer and songwriter.
After playing a series of sold-out concerts to promote her first record in 2011 and completing a 2012 residency at Rockwood Music Hall, Shaina is developing a new trio project with musicians Mike Brun and Jacob Colin Cohen, fusing three-part soul harmonies and acoustic jazz-influenced arrangements with an ear for infectious, laid-back grooves and a passion for evocative songwriting.
As a songwriter, she was Ars Nova's 2012 Composer-in-Residence, and her debut album, What Otters Do, was featured on NPR/WNYC's Best Gigs of 2011 listing. She's currently composing the score for a new musical, with playwright Kim Rosenstock, commissioned by the Tony-Award-winning Oregon Shakespeare Festival, writing a musical commission for Ars Nova and recently created songs for Walt Disney Imagineering. Her original soul-folk opera, The Daughters, has been developed and produced several times in New York, and is currently available to be licensed for production.
As a performer, Shaina has traveled the world in her multi-faceted capacities as a vocalist and actor. She was Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeah's vocal standby and choir member in her psycho-opera, Stop the Virgens at St. Ann's Warehouse and the Sydney Opera House, and has appeared on stages from Germany to Abu Dhabi to Toronto to Nashville, and venues including the Beacon Theater, Madison Square Garden and the Kennedy Center. Shaina has been in countless workshops and readings of new musicals in New York and regularly performs with hit musical sketch comedy team, Political Subversities. She is currently making her Off-Broadway debut as Princess Mary in the critically acclaimed electropop opera, Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812.
A fellow of the MacDowell Colony, the Yaddo Colony and the Johnny Mercer Songwriter's Project, a recent TEDx conference speaker, and a featured artist in Gc Watches new ad campaign, Shaina is on the music theatre faculty at Pace University, and is a University Scholar alumnus of NYU's Tisch School of the Arts.
Mike Brun is a musical composer, arranger, and performer known for the diversity of projects in which he has been involved.
During his time living in New Orleans just after Hurricane Katrina, he sang in and directed Tulane University's official a cappella group, Green Envy; was an original member of The Revivalists, for which he played bass, electric and acoustic guitars, percussion, and provided backing vocals; and studied trumpet under Vance Woolf. More recently, having moved back to the Northeast, Mike has generated music for and even performed in experimental theatre productions (Aggrocrag's Hello from the Children of Planet Earth in 2010 for Philly Fringe Festival, Fresh Ground Pepper's Our Farm in 2011); created a Soundcloud blog where he released a free track of music every twelve days for the entirety of 2011; and recorded and performed in a podcast for Emma Koenig's Fuck! I'm in my Twenties blog.
