Young drummer and composer Barra Brown has assembled a new quintet, and their debut album "Songs For A Young Heart" is due out on PJCE Records August 15th, with CD Release Show to follow on September 10th at Secret Society.
The Barra Brown Quintet (BBQ) is comprised of several notable figures from the Portland Jazz community. Bandleader, drummer and composer Barra Brown is a member of the newest surge of young musicians to develop a presence in the creative music scene here in Portland. A truly eclectic musician, Barra studied classical flute performance at Lewis and Clark while studying drum set on the side through the prestigious Alan Jones Academy of Music (AJAM).
Barra has also toured the continental United States and Alaska with indiefolk group "Alameda," and released one record with "The Wishermen," a collective of young jazz heavyweights dedicated to exploring genre boundaries and creating a new amalgam of their many styles and influences.
The BBQ is Barra's newest enterprise and has the distinction of being the only group dedicated fully to realizing his vision as a composer and as a player.
The compositions and group interplay create something greater than the sum of its parts: a sensitive ensemble presenting epic, sweeping compositions with finesse and subtlety. "Songs for a Young Heart" is an impressive debut, and Barra Brown's career as a bandleader is off to a roaring start.

Three years ago, Vikesh Kapoor performed at Howard Zinn's memorial service in Boston, in front of Zinn's family and colleagues (including Noam Chomsky). Inspired by Zinn's lifelong battle against class/race injustice, Kapoor spent the next two years in Portland working on a concept record based on a related newspaper article. His debut album, The Ballad Of Willy Robbins, out this Fall, chronicles the brutal but hopeful story of a working class man who slowly loses everything: ambitions, health, family, shelter. The album was co-produced by Adam Selzer (M. Ward) and features stellar participation from Nate Query (Decemberists, Black Prairie), Jeff Ratner (Langhorne Slim) and Birger Olsen (Denver).
